Default Re: 65 Spring Nationals - Who were they?

Rat,
ok well thanks for a few more clues there.
66 Winter -
Yes, the little Chevy II was a light combo. The 327/350hp L79 was not a competitive combo in general as the engine is so overrated. 325hp would still be generous. But there was one HUGE difference in 1966 that led Jenkins and others to run the combo that year:

For 1966, A/S ran the same rules as S/S, that is, any intake, any cam. So there were some screaming, essentially SuperStock Novas (except for the smaller tires, which also gave an edge to the little Nova) that year.

But this was no longer "stock" class with stock intakes and even notionally stock cams. That was the secret for 1966.

65 Spring-
Still not sure if Borkes was Ford or Dodge but I'm betting Dodge.
This link

and also Davis "Drag Racing the Family Sedan" says Borkes was Dodge.

In that same skunwerks link though, they list Stutzman as a Ford, but I have the car down as a 421 SuperDuty Cat, which also fits the A/S=8.70 class that year. Seems other folks are guessing a little just like we are.

The Ulrey car interested me, see these links:
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...01085/page-521

https://www.fordfe.com/o-t-mike-ulrey-bros-t69934.html

The 64 LIGHTWEIGHT Gal with 427 HiRiser fits AA/S=7.00 class in 64-65, which became A/S=7.00 class in 1966. So the picture of the Ulrey car in front of Stahl's Hemi are both in A/S=7.00 in 1966.

It's POSSIBLE that a standard HEAVYWEIGHT 64 Gal with 427 HiRiser under the hood would fit the 1965 A/S=8.70 class, but i've never heard of one run that way, which would be interesting indeed.

Maybe Tom Kaasch or somebody will dig out the win sheets from 1965 SpringNationals & we can nail things down a little more.
