Default Cummings 340HP

I am considering a new (used) coach and most of the ones I look at have the Cummins 340HP 6.7litre engine. They look pretty low on the torque compared to others like the 360 hp which is an 8.3L motor. These are not easy to find. Does anyone have any feedback on the towing capabilities of the 340? Looking at 36ft or so. Thx

Those 6.7's are pretty stout in the duallies. My toter has a Mercedes 330 HP it is 7.2 L but has 1000 ft lbs of torque. It pulls my 40ft gooseneck real nice. I would take one for a ride and see how it performs. Always better off with more power than less when towing. Also check the hitch capacity and the tire load rating.

Because of being in the rv business I've had the opportunity to tow with quite a few coaches of variable sizes and horsepower. Of course more power is always nice but we all forget it comes a cost. When I started towing with a motor home was in the early years I towed with a 275 HP Cummins 5.9 with a 5 spd Allison . Left like a stone droneve down the road pretty good ,for 10 mpg towing 10k# s. Bottom line that 340/HP Cummins will get it done with a 6spd Allison, a 360hp better but if you find a quality coach ,good floorplan ,clean in your budget I'd buy it. If you get caught in the HP thing ,just like racing speed cost money how fast you wanna go ! Just my .02 cents.

Thanks Mike & Mark, Good feedback. I am looking for a 34-36ft range and it is tough to find more than 300. There are some 340s out there but tough. My dually has more torque (765) but a different animal. Even worse, I need a drop down bunk or something. It really narrows things down. Mark, I spoke to someone at your place last week and Mac speak highly of you guys. Thanks, Joe E.
