Default Fahnestock, Barbato ride hot hand to victory @ Atco

The Mid Atlantic .90 Association continued its 2016 season at Atco Dragway for Race # 5& 6 of the season. With threating forecasts on the horizon the weekend looked to be a complete washout but, perseverance by the Atco staff and series president both events were completed in a timely fashion before any rain hit.

Chase Fahnestock & Kelli Barbato continued their hot streaks during the weekend to move into contention for the championship going into the final weekend of racing to be held in late September. On Saturday, Fahnestock out of Newville, Pa took down Dave Long and his S&W Dragster in Super Comp. Chase laid down a 14 thousandth package in the final that made it very tough for Long to get around and it handed the Newville resident his second victory of the 2016 season. In Super Gas, Sean Lang out of Coopersburg, Pa took his first victory in the 9.90 class when New York resident lit the red-light. Lang follows up an emotional victory by his father Mike at Cecil County a few weeks earlier. Rounding out the action on Saturday was the Mid Atlantic Super Street Association. The final would produce a first time winner as Rich “Gramps” Knarich and Rich Preiser squared off in the finals. In the end, Knarich out of Seaford, De took home the victory with a 10.921 to Preiser’s 10.940 to claim his first ever victory in MASSA.

On Sunday, Bath, Pa resident Kelli Barbato continued her hot streak in Super Street with a victory over Rick Mattioli in a battle of Camaros. Barbato squeaked out a close one over Mattioli (10.868 to 10.864) to claim her second victory in just less than 3 weeks to move into 2nd in points behind Keith Mayers. Tom Slater out of Colonia, NJ prevented Saturday’s winner Fahnestock the “Double-Up” in Super Comp. Slater wheeled his Undercover Dragster to a 8.908 time and his first ever Mid Atlantic Super Comp victory. With his runner-up and win on Saturday, Fahnestock took over the points lead and will be looking for his first championships in Super Comp come September. Closing out the weekend on Sunday was Super Gas. In a battle of Leigh High Valley, Pa Two time MASGA Champion Tom Goldman out of Allentown, Pa took his first victory of 2016 by defeating Maple Grove Runner-Up Don Knoblick out of Bath, Pa. Goldman laid down a perfect 9.900 to overcome a hole shot advantage for Knoblick at the hit of the green. With the victory it moved Goldman into the Top 10 and in prime position to collect his third championship in a very close point’s battle.
