Looking @ GMC diesel trucks

Looking at used 3/4 ton 4x4 to tow a 5th wheel about 12K-13K weight.
Any years to stay away from? Good points? bad one's?

I know about Fords & Dodge Ram, but have no knowledge about GMC.

The Duramax is a great engine, however the DEF systems are an issue! Stay away from the Ford unless it's a 7.3!

OK let me reword this...What is the DEF system??

I have no issues with DEF on my 2012, but my dad's 2011 always has issues. A friend tows a 44' goose with a 2012 SRW with no issues and gets around 11. I believe he deleted the DEF system.
