We went to Dunn Benson Dragstrip today and was amazed. This racing facility has been completely rebuilt. The track surface is new, finished paving Friday, and has been extended to run 1/4 mile races. Understand the schedule is to start running some 1/4 mile events in a few months. All of the old facility has been torn down and all new. The concession area has picnic tables, with outdoor grills. The concession stand has heated and air conditioned indoor eating facilities. I had my whole family there. Lots of racers and good family atmosphere. I understand that they will be running a IHRA Summit Points race there this spring.
Our car went rounds and a new best et. Congratulations to all of the Staff at Dunn Benson Dragstrip. |

That was the first track I went too as a child, I would love to see how it looks with all the changes.

Wow, must be quite an improvement. I used to bracket race a low 5 sec hard-tail RED at that track occasionally and it was always a white knuckle ride in the shutdown. Short, bumpy and rapidly approaching trees. Was a decent bunch of racers though and the owner was quite a character. Glad to see it is getting a new lease on life.

Bill,
What years did you race there? I was track champ there in 92&93 and the grand champ in 92. Yes that track has come a long way in a short period. It is a very nice facility. Chip Johnson |

Hey Chip, I lived in Raleigh and raced at a bunch of the tracks in the area starting in '98. I went to Roxboro and Piedmont quite a bit too. With all those tracks around it seemed like you could race at least 4 days a week during the season. I moved to TN in 2000 and sold the RED and switched to stock. Too much electronic junk in the bracket car for me.
