Smile Air cleaners!

Anybody tested with running air cleaners, on and off? I've been wondering about the K&N on a single 4 bbl on a SS/DA any thoughts? The engine is a 438in Hemi that should turn about 8400 in the lights. Thanks in advance, John Lang

Hello John,

I think I can provide some insight with respect to your air cleaner question and how it relates to your specific application.

I have several test results for you to review. I'm confident that a much better choice exists than the one you mentioned.

What a range of comments. Good intentions to be sure, but certainly misguided in many cases.

You certainly should utilize an air filter. As long as it's the correct one. The key is evaluating media performance under the conditions/flow rates that these cars will face. We lab/track test our competition filters routinely. You can have engine protection and high flow as well.

Cotton gauze, is not, nor was it ever designed to be, an engine air filter media. Avoid it and avoid foam filters at all times.

Let me know when you're ready to test John.

Regards,
Ed

We've tested with and without an air cleaner on our application. We apparently have too much underhood turbulence so the engine actually prefers it on. You can try a taller one to offset the loss of flow.

Do you sell just the filters, or complete filter/base/lid assemblies?
What is the range of sizes and shapes?

I'm all for a good filter, but have been running without due to the lack of intelligent, efficient filters available.

I do run a factory HP base sealed up to the hood scoop, but no filter.

It's been well proven that filtered airflow directed correctly is a performance enhancement on a carbureted engine.

Hi Jeff,

I was trying to address John's specific question and remain in a "Helpin rather than Sellin" mode!

The site does provide very good technical information but reading it at length can be, shall we say, less than exciting! If you really want to have a good time, sit down in the lunch room with a few of the filter performance engineers and listen to their treatise. I assure you that you'll be looking for the remote to see who's guest starring on Love Boat pretty quickly!

Hello Dave,

We design, engineer and manufacture the filters. At this time, we have not produced a base/lid although we are considering a design. We can produce any size and shape filter and universal application selections will increase over the coming months. The 14" round series can be produced in any height. Standard are the 3",4" and 5" tall filters. I'm sure a bias exists but I do agree with your statement that indicated "the lack of intelligent, efficient filters available."

Regards,
Ed

Smile Re: Air cleaners!

Thanks for all the idea's and options, now i should apologize for not putting the hood on and then asking the question! My car is a 65 Dodge SS with the factory scoop! I don't know if that changes any of the advice, but i thank all for trying! I've never run this car with a single 4, so i thought i could get some help! In the past on some of my other cars i've run the air cleaner base, with some help.......... Thanks a bunch. Later .......... . John Lang
