Inline Throttle Stop
Are many still using an in-line stop and being competitive?

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
Not with a carb.
All the carb experts will tell you not to use a inline stop. Just My 2 Cents Rick Cates |

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
I use one with mechanical injection. It works pretty well the vast majority of the time.
In 5 division races last year, I had two runs that were far from the target, like .07 fast and .08 slow. Both of these were time runs, but still not good because you don't know what the next run will look like. No data logger, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a variance in throttle stop RPM.

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
Still see an awful lot of good , repeating , dragsters using them.
The cable helps prevent the deflection you have with solid linkage. I've done a few door cars with cable actuated inline stops that have worked quite well , But I would not use one with conventional solid linkage any more.

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
Would you consider a Maxx Speed carb an inline stop?

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
I use one on my S/C dragster.
Had a disc plate stop and the inline stop both on the car at the same time during part of 2014 Won a race using the plate stop. Took it off and ran the inline just to see which might be better. No real big difference....Just had to juggle stop timer numbers a little..... Won another race that year with the inline stop. I keep a very close eye on Stop RPM and everyone knows that's the big issue with Stop racing.... Would I prefer a Max Speed Carb.....absolutely.....but I'm not buying one. Just can't justify spending that kind of $$$ for a carb when I already have 2 good ones... An inline needs the most rigid mount you can make. I used an inline with Ron's injection and won with that too....and did NOT go back to an idle with that car/engine/system. A similar setup on a newer car refused to work though..... I use the inline stop as a starting line enhancer when I bracket race....Takes 5 minutes to change it from S/C to bracket mode... I sold my plate stop and prefer the inline....

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
I was being a little sarcastic in my Maxx Speed comment as the OP and second poster made it sound as if no one ran these anymore, when I think the last 3 or 4 champions on the S/G and S/C side are running a Maxx Speed (inline) stop.
Last year was the first year I ran 8.90 stuff after 30 years of bracket racing and I did it with a Biondo SLE/inline stop combo. In 4 races I made it to the quarters 3 times. Only thing I noticed b/w my inline and my buddies that ran under carb stops was the fact that I had to make bigger swings on timers for weather conditions than they did, but once that learning curve was over, the overall consistency was pretty negligible. That being said I have heard of S/ST and S/G guys struggling a bit with them maybe b/c of the reasons Tom mentioned. I enjoyed it enough that I purchased a billet Maxx Speed this winter so hopefully that investment will pay some dividends this year and get me past the quarter-final round. |

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
I have one on my car with a Dominator. Our driver, Tony Morris won Hot Rod in the Saturday race at Bradenton with it.
I'm not a carb expert but, have an idea on how they work. I've flogged that combo (inline linkage with Dominator) to death to make it work. The key was the BLP external linkage and adjusting it to cruise on the front two barrels only. I tried the 1:1 linkage ratio and the cruise RPM was just terribly sloppy. The progressive linkage keeps the throttle blades open away from the transfer slot and cleans up the cruise. Oh, and I use a power valve and I run 93 octane. |

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
I have used both inline and under the carb stops.
The inline I used with a ron's methanol fuel injection and it worked well in hot weather However in the fall when temps dropped in the 60's it was not consistent and not predictable. ( the F.I. Was too fat on the stop) If you use this type of stop you absolutely must have a solid pedal stop. The #1 stop under carb stop with a Quick Fuel gas throttle stop carb was the easiest to set up and dial in. I also think it's safer as it is independent of the throttle linkage. The only thing I don't like about this set up is that racing gas is much more expensive than methanol. I cannot afford a Maxx Speed carb/stop but I would like to try one.

Re: Inline Throttle Stop
Working with an inline stop a .90 car has to deal with two accelerator pump shots. One at the hit and another when the car comes off the stop. An undercarb stop only has the pump shot at the hit. The dynamics of all this is easily seen on the RacePak O2 graph.
