Default Chevy 520 T cyl. heads

At one time many years ago, the Chevy 520 small block heads with a T were considered the best flowing of all the numbers allowed for anybody building a 265 or 283 Chevy....With what is allowed today for machining, would a plain 520 do just as well? What about the 896...did they make one with a T as well...and how does that compare to the 520? Did the T stand for truck, or the engine plant...Tonawanda??
