I noticed someone asked about the 2 piece driveshaft. Do you still use it? A friend fo mine, who bought the SS/PA 59 Chevy I built in 72 switch it to a BBC and bracket raced it, running mid 10s and everyone was amazed he still used the stock shaft setup. Never gave any problems. Just kept a close eye on carrier bearing.

Pretty discouraged, Bob.
If it were just 3 or 4 inexplainable defective parts, or minor errors on my part...
no problem
But DAMN....
it's EVERYTHING !

Danny, that event sounds like more fun than I could be permitted !
However, again, the whole idea of this project, was to try and regain some respect from today's racers/enthusiasts, towards the 409 engine and/cars. I've had them for the past 22+ years, and the WHOLE TIME, I've had to listen to the "other" Chevy guys politely make fun of them ! You know what THAT caused ?!!.... gotta prove them wrong... at any / all costs.
well
I got the "all costs" part down pretty good now.

Now that the traction problem seems to be getting rectified, a supposed fuel delivery problem had to be addressed.
Did it. Lovely parts, properly installed.
Fixed NOTHING !
The GLORIOUS MSD distributor has the rotor out of phase with the cap. Yeah, one QUALITY $400 part there.... !
Anyhow, I devised a way to remedy THAT.
Today, I'm going to see if the "miss" is gone.
I'm not optimistic.

Anyhow guys... thank YOU for the encouragement... I think... it's BECAUSE of the encouragement, that I keep spending money and time on this thing !
HEEE HEEEE !!!

Yes, still two piece driveshaft... but I made it up out of more "substantial" components,

Aubrey, I`ll be at Bremerton Aug 25&26th, for the Super Shifter race, as will a frind of mine who happens to race a 62 BelAir 2 dr sedan with a 409 and a Jerico. Wills 62 has gone 10.8 ET `s on 9x30 Goodyears, and has the basic stock rear suspension system, weighing 3900 lbs. There should be a photo or 2 of the green 62 BelAir on our website; www.bcsuper****er.com.

Rory, do you know how bad I'd like to see a western Canadian 409 car in the 10's ?!!!!!
Can you imagine how much I'd like to see the picture ?
To give you an idea of how this is going ....
Your webpage link is dead !
just ADDING to the frustration !

BTW... With the distributor internals phased properly, this thing sure starts better !

Won't be going anywhere for a while though.

aaaaah, THERE we are now....
went for a test of the engine ( for miss )
One thing hadn't gone wrong yet...
now...
wiped out no. 3 intake lobe on the cam ( something seems to have happened to the Schubeck lifter... VERY low in the lifter bore )
I've been building engines for myself and many other people, for 31 years. NEVER lost a cam.
If there was going to be a first time, it WOULD be with THIS car !

Camshaft ?
I have another, same profile, 110 centreline separation instead of 108.
No problem
Schubeck lifters ?
well...
see you next year !

Thank YOU, Novaman and Rory...
Certainly looks like THAT's where a career stick-shift driver should be !

Wow, major bummer on the cam/lifter! Let us know what you find when you tear it down. Hopefully the debris didn't hurt anything else.

Aubrey,
Skip the Shubecks, and the wait. Go get a set of DLC coated tool steel lifters from PPPC or Performance Research.

If it did break the Shubeck, I hope it didn't kill the rest of the engine. The debris from those things is horrendous.

Yes guys, I am concerned about that.
Should pull the intake today. But I'll tell ya'... if I wasn't discouraged before... I sure am now.
After waiting for my -pre-paid crankshaft machning for 5+ months, I spent the entire month of July, assembling the car, and attempting to get it working. No time with the kids, no outings, nothing...
and the WHOLE TIME it was 85-95 degrees !
Can't afford to put anymore money or time in this car this summer.
