I thought I would follow up on the Smothers Brothers posts. Through a friend who happens to know Dick Smothers we tried to arrange a meeting and do an article with him on the whole story. Unfortunately, after sending him several questions on the subject, Mr. Smothers decided not to go forward.

Probably the first major article on the 1968 car. Later it received a new '69 front clip from Olds engineer Dale Smith.

By April of 1969 the '68 W-31 received a face lift. Note 1969 Cutlass cars did not have vent windows in the front doors, unless they were a post coupe 33677 body style

I am happy to report that I am now the "caretaker" of the Jim Waibel/Smothers Brothers, 69, King Olds, Cutlass. The car is beginning a complete restoration and will debut at the 2022 NHRA Gatornationals. Jim, Margaret and family will be present.
To date, it is the only documented car found out of the five that Oldsmobile built. It is one 1 of the 26 1969, W-31, Cutlass convertibles that Olds built and 1 of the 5 team cars.

Here is the latest update on the Jim Waibel/Smothers Brothers W-31 Cutlass Convertible. I selected Garner Custom and Restorations of Sarasota, Florida to do the restoration. Garner's has restored some of the finest Oldsmobiles in the country and are excited about this one.
At first the plan was for the car to be finished by the 2022 NHRA Gatornationals. Well, the body is in such great shape, Garner's said they could finish the car early and asked if I wanted to take it to the MCACN ( Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals) this November? My response was, Absolutely!
The Jim Waibel/King Olds will be part of the special unveiling Saturday morning, November 20th. I hope you can be there to see this piece of racing and Oldsmobile history restored to its former glory.
