Default IHRA rule questions

The 2013 rules for Hot Rod say stutter boxes are not legal. Is this new for 2013?

This means cars no longer pause for x amount of time and then go, right?

It has always stated that stutter boxes are prohibited but also says that down track throttle stops are permitted in the same section. Not sure what a stutter box is myself. hope this helps you.

I believe a "stutter box" was a timer controlled rev limiter and as I recall they were quite accurate at hitting the index.

I thought a stutter box was a timed rpm limiter and a throttle stop was a device that limited throttle opening.

So nothing has changed from a few years ago, right? They still leave, fall on their face and then bolt to the finish line. So you get numbers like 10.91 at 141.23 mph.

Stutter boxes used a timer to turn a down track rev limiter off and on.
It was amazingly accurate at controlling the ET.
As engines got more HP the timers were on so long , some cars went nearly to the 1000' on the rev limiter.
It also sounded like crap and was responsible for more than a few engine failures ,which is what prompted their banning many years ago.
I think they've been illegal since '89 in NHRA.

Is this something different that setting the rpm chip in the MSD? I would think that putting a lower chip in will allow you to control how the car runs as well.

I have another question with the IHRA rules...

I noticed H/R (S/ST) is a 2600# minimum but there is no mention of minimum wieght in S/R (S/G)? NHRA S/G is 2100# is there no minimum in S/R?

Not that I can get my car much lighter than 2100#, but just wandering. I dont want to show up at a race and find my car is too light.
