It's been mentioned before in response to the suggestion to remove reaction times from the time slip. There are racers that are pretty consistent with RT's. With a box and no RT's to go by, all they do is take out time till they red light. Then put a little back in!
It's possible to do that without a box too, by changing rpm's, tire pressure, etc. But at least it's done with physical/manual changes, not electronic, pneumatic, etc. Keep RT's, but reduce electronic driver aids. Locomotion Racing http://www.geocities.com/locomotionracing

What Myron said.
Before reaction times were displayed, there were an even smaller number of drivers who really knew how things worked, and they dominated like no other. Michael Beard Staging Light Graphic Design & Printing Duck Tape/Loctite Racing H - I - J/CM '80 Volare 360 Magnum

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH QUALIFING RUNS IN A DIVISIONAL OR NATIONAL EVENT TO ADJUST A DELAY DEVICE IF REACTION TIMES WERE NOT DISPLAYED WHERE A DRIVER COULD DOMINATE ROUND AFTER ROUND AS ONLY A CERTAIN FEW DO. I AM 63 YEARS OLD,STARTED RACING AT THE AGE OF 16 WHICH IS SOME 47 YEARS AND I DONT REMEMBER ANY DRIVERS DOMINATING UNTIL THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS WHEN ELECTRONICS HAVE TAKEN OVER THIS SPORT.

Well Allen, that`s where you`re wrong. I have a delay box in the dragster I run,and if you don`t mess with the car,you know right where to set your delay. I know that most class racers out there can`t leave their car alone after one run,so it would be difficult to set a delay box for them. I can go an entire off season, and come up for the first test n tune, and be very near the .000 on the first hit. What I`m curious about is,what happens if the delay boxes are allowed, and there is a Stock/Super Stock Combo race? I`m not afraid to race against delay boxes, but some are. Lane

HEY LANE,YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT ON THE DELAY BOX ADJUSTMENT BUT I HAVE SEEN MANY RACERS THAT HAVE NOT HAD GOOD LIGHTS USING A DELAY BOX,NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THIS ISSUE IS OVER SOME ONE WILL COME UP WITH SOMETHING ELSE TO CHANGE

Wasn't class racing, but names like Chip Horton, and Steve Taylor (RIP) come to mind. Ray Thurston won the track championship at Beaver Springs 4-5 years in a row, then Brad Adams won it 6 years in a row. When Thurston started out, they didn't show R/T's, and he slaughtered people. When they started showing R/T's, everyone found out that he was .040's all the time, and everyone else was.... much worse! Each time period have had great drivers. It isn't just since electronics. Its hard work and seat time and hand/eye coordination or timing, whatever one calls it. Take 70-74 . It was Dave Boertman and Bobby Warren. In 39 National events in that 5 year period Dave or Bobby was in the winners circle 14 times, 7 each.
