Re: CCMP Race #1 Roxboro April 6th
Roxboro Motorsports Park Race Report:
This past Saturday we visited Roxboro Motorsports Park for our season opener & a first visit for Carolina Classic Modified Production. Unfortunately we had a low car count as a few of our racers are still waiting on parts & also a few new cars are in the finishing stages to get ready for competition. Steve Johnson with a new engine combination for 2024 SS/EM 267 CI, Darrell Lail SS/BM 359 CI, & Robbie Draughon SS/AM 370 CI were in attendance. The weather was difficult on us on Saturday but through all the trials, we were able to finish the race. Johnson picked up exactly where he left off in November running 5.7850 off his 6.50 index (0.715), Lail went a 5.4333 on his 6.01 index (0.5767), & Draughon had issues at the start to run a 23.3375 on his 5.90 index. All 3 drivers had issues during Q2 so they ladder was set with Steve Johnson collecting the $200.00 Top Qualifier money sponsored by Hodges Custom Homes & receiving the round #1 bye run. Lail & Draughon were the first pair out for round #1 of eliminations. Lail left the starting line first with a .0749 RT & Draughon once again had issues at the hit giving the round win to Lail who went a 5.4215 at 127.51 mph on his 6.01 index (.5885). Johnson was .0367 on his reaction & went a 5.8152 at 117.31 mph on his 6.50 index (.6848) for the easy round 1 win. Johnson would have lane choice over Lail in the finals. As the ole saying goes, you race on the track & not on paper is the best way to explain the finals. On paper, Johnson would have been the easy winner as he had a handle on his new combination & was on top of the qualifying sheets but we don't race on paper. This race was over at the initial hit as Steve went -.0076 giving the win to Lail. Mr. Darrell was ready to challenge his buddy for the win though & had Steve not gone red, it would have been a great finals. He had a .0153 RT, ran a 5.4831 at 127.33 on his 6.01 index (.05269). Steve ran a 5.8058 at 117.37 mph on his 6.50 index (.6942). Robbie made the homemade trophy for the first race of the season & I think it has now been determined that this is the "official" Carolina Classic Modified Production trophy for the 2024 season. I choose the design & convinced him to make my design over the one he wanted to make & in the end, he was glad he went with what his wife said do 😉! Thanks for Robbie for always taking the time to make my ideas come to life & Thanks to MJ at Mj Custom Printing & Graphics for the trailer checks. This was our 1st race of the 6 we have scheduled for the 2024 season & there might possibly be a couple more added in the mix as non points races. I'm trying to get enough racers together to compete at the NMCA this coming weekend at Rockingham Dragway. Our next event on our schedule is May 4th at KDS Motorsports. |
