Ford had a recall for cam sensors on the 7.3-- also cruise control and windshield wipers---- 2 or 4 whl drive made no difference

If you can get a 7.3 diesel with low miles and good shape, buy it. I work for a company that hauls machined steel parts, just sold a 2000 7.3 diesel van with 445,000 miles on it, no engine or trans problem. Cam sensor the only problem. They also now have a 2000 7.3 diesel with 260k on it and runs like a top, Have another one with 170k on it, no major problems.
Ford dealer, needless to say a good friend, says stay away from the 6.0 liter diesel.
They also have a chevy 2006 5500 diesel flat bed, runs good but has used up 2 turbos before 100k miles.
My brother has a 2006 cummins (pre emissions) ram 3500 2 wheel drive mega cab and that truck is unbelievable. It tows a 28ft champion tag trailer through the mountains of pa at 65mph and does not downshift. Not towing will get 20 to 25 on highway at 70mph.
Met a racer at maple grove with a new 2012 dodge cummins and he hates it, Says mileage is terrible. Do not know fuel mileage. (he traded in 7.3 ford diesel)

My belief is the big key to all of this is in 2006 goverment changed diesel emmisions rules and manufacturers still do not have a good handle on. For reference, Cat diesel left the motorhome market in 2006.

You hear varied opinions on the 6.7 Cummings but I have heard nothing but praise for the 5.9 Cummings....My 3500 Dually with the 5.9 was unbelievable....

I have a friend who runs a repair shop, specializing in Diesel.. I would guess he's done 12-15 6.0L's in the last 3 years..
He raises the Cab off, to get at engine..
There's always a Ford sitting waiting for head gaskets and head bolts
The guys are correct the 7.3's are good ...

I took a 2013 black reg cab dually to Line-X yesterday 42 km on it awesome driving truck... not as nice a Duramax with Allison

The only reason that you HAVE TO remove the cab from the chassis with any of the Ford F250/350 diesels is that they use HEAD STUDS instead of head bolts--- you cannot get the head up high enough to clear the studs---I've been told that it is a FOURTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR WARRANTY repair job to replace an engine in a 6.0 or 6.4 parts and labor because of all the labor involved !!!!-- I have a friend that has a 6.0 and the only reason that he has no problems is that he changes the oil and filter EVERY 2500-3000 miles uses nothing but Shell Rotella--YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER RELIGIOUSLY NO NORE THAN 5000 MILES!!!!--part of the problem here is that the 6.0/6.4 uses an oil pressure system to operate the injectors--- a tiny speck of dirt in the system and an injector does not open that cylinder runs lean/hot torches the head gasket and major problems---the 6.0 only has 4 head bolts per cylinder so the head tends to wanto lift off the block and presto bad head gasket---this engine has a EGR valve that is oil pressure operated--- dirty oil will not let the egr valve operate properly and NO POWER--- also there is afuel injection control module that goes bad ---bad batteries/insufficient voltage causes that---
