We run a N/SA aspen.......We have broken several 8 3/4 rears.
8 1/4 is weaker and murder to find gears for low than 4.5.

Well that settles it, the 8.25 is out! You have years of experience with this particular combo and I take your word as "gospel" in this matter! Thanks for chiming in John. Craig

. Probably a 4.88. Unless GTX John has a better suggestion. The car is ready to run except for the rear end and springs. Thanks, Craig.

Post Re: Chrysler 8.75 for Aspen/Volare

I would have thought 5.13 for the short stroke 318 and 4.86 for a 360. But the higher the ratio, the weaker the smaller teeth are. 4.86 worked well for my crate 360. I was wondering at what point weight-wise one would consider going up a step. I'm still working on a Aspen wagon for J at almost 3,800 lbs!

The Dana 60 suggestion is a good one. Weight is hard on 8 3/4's and they're not as easy to check the teeth on.

There was a fast Mirada that ran an 8 1/4" rear for a long time. But I don't know any more details.

Paul can elaborate for himself but imagine he’s just stating that since the OP is going to run a stocker he’ll need to run a racing wheel which offers different offsets so he’ll just have to measure what will work. BTW a 10 inch wheel is what’s needed.

Myron, I ran a 5.13 in my 360 Volare (~3500 pounds) and ran 6800,6800 and 7200 through the lights. Think that’s pretty close but perhaps either GTX John or George Widuch (Marcus) or one of the Loge boys will chime in.

That's understandable, but what I said, he has to use-make a housing with the same width, backing plate to backing plate as original (rule book) then find a rim that will work. In other words If that 8-1/4 is 53" the 8-3/4 has to be 53" so find whatever, cut it to the right size, unless NHRA is not checking that anymore.?

5.13 gear is what we run unless going to Denver......

We ran (carefully) Mirada for a long time (Now belongs to Bakersfield
Track Manager who won class at a Nationals this year with the old Girl)
with a very expensive/trick 8 1/4 Paul Rossi built.
It held up well.....But we kept our fingers crossed !

BTW it is still in the car to this day and racing. Again = Gears
past 4.50 are no longer available and that is not enough gear
for a 3500 lb. plus 318 Stocker to be very competitive.

i just want to be clear with your statement. When you say gears above 4.5, you are talking about the 8 14"
