Spare tire
Switched over from factory fuel tank to trunk mounted cell. No way can I get a 13,14 or 15" tire/wheel back in the trunk. Can I just mount a rim in the factory spare tire location?

Re: Spare tire
Is there a requirement to carry a spare tire? I've never seen anything in the rulebook, although if you're looking to add some "legal" weight to your car that may be one way. I've heard stories of folks who added things other than air to the spare, and tech inspectors who aggravated hernias inspecting them!

Re: Spare tire
Easier for us to just bolt some weight in or install a weight box.

Re: Spare tire
I used to use an 8.20 x 15 recapped 8 ply snow tire (sometimes full of water)...
Back in the day there was no such thing as ballast. Either bolt the weight in, in the location that you want or use a weight box. Bob

Re: Spare tire
I would think that you could run the wheel. I use to run some heavy mufflers hanging under car. They were not hooked up but needed the weight.

Re: Spare tire
Have you tried one of the “space saver” oem type spare tire/wheel combinations?

Re: Spare tire
I thought about that but am not sure if its legal considering its not available for the combo. Pulled a 13" rim w/o a tire and it cleared. Have the battery and fuel relay mounted where the the weight box would go.

Re: Spare tire
I would think it would be considered removeable ballast and be legal in that respect. No different than a barbell weight.

Re: Spare tire
I was asked by NHRA one time if the spare tire I was carrying would bolt up to the car.
