I know when these cars were new they were delivered quite a bit under the shipping weight that had been given to NHRA. I was at the 1965 Springnationals and I am pretty sure both the winner and runner up in class got tossed for illegal ballast. So my guess is its a lot easier to go up a class with these cars than to go down a class.
