When we ran stock back in the 60's with a 57 stick car it was a progressive program, when we fixed one thing it moved on to something else. Ended up with dodge side gears in the posi, welded the posi unit around where it separated or it would break those "special" left hand thread bolts, Henry's axles, steel caps with long bolts that reached right thru the casting and softened gears, the local heat treater brought them back to around 50 Rw C. It was a long time ago but I don't remember being allowed to run other than the Chevy rear end in stock.

Never had a problem with '57 stock rear and axles running 220hp auto. When I switched to a '60 Super Stock stick I started breaking axles. I finally replaced with a stronger axle and it solved the problem. However I don;t remember if the axles were Pontiac or what. I think that I replaced the Posi gears and axles to make it work.

We were not "allowed", but after axles, etc, my station wagon was spitting pinions out the front on the starting line. I put the '57 Pontiac under mine to keep it together. More unsprung weight, and no performance gains at all. Just stopped greasing down the starting lines, and going home, car broken, and me broke. LOL Not proud of doing it, but that was a stupid rule. I knew guys with 9" Fords under theirs, I had no problems with that either. The starting line guys probably appreciated fewer grease downs, and may have not cared why.
