Let me post what I believe is the real problem, having been a Security Manager with access to TS material. Let give my thoughts on how all this classified material should have been controlled. Once a document has been classifiedi, a control number is placed on it by whoever is running the CMCC. When a piece of material is checked out, an individual must sign for it. When it is turned in that same individual signed it back in and is relieved of the responsibility and it falls back under the control of the CMCC and placed in a Class C container with a 3 way combination lock.

Here is the real kicker, elected officials do not require the completion of a Background Investigation (SF86). I have not only been subjected to numerous background checks and interviewed numerous individuals for access to classified material. An example of information asked and what can have you denied access is: have you been convicted of a crime or have you ever filed for bankruptcy, do you or have you ever done drugs. These are just a few of the questions on the SF86. Again, unfortunately, elected Federal officials are not subject to a Background Investigation (BI).

In both, the Trump and Biden cases, improper storage of classified material is a slap on the hand. When I worked with State Dept. a JF-11 was issued and the individual would have to explain why the material was not properly stored and I have found some real interesting stuff that would have compromised the security of this nation. Nobodies career was ended...nothing. Here is the difference in the two cases, when Biden was asked to return the material, he did. You know the rest of the story, Obstruction of justice is a serious crime and nobody is above the law.

Those boxes were taken out of his old office and moved to his home just like the documents that Pence had and neither knew they were there. The problem with Trump is he wouldn't give them back was flaunting them and maybe before this is all over we'll find out if any National Secrets were compromised because rumor has it that he had taken some documents out of the Country!
