Default 70 amx 360 carb

can anyone clarify what the blue print sheet is saying under carb for 1970 290hp 360 amc combo becuase i think it should be a autolite 4300 4bl but all the blue print sheet says is (owa-4/auto) i'm pretty positive the /auto is specifying a automatic trans and i've looked through the accepted parts list and didn't see a reference to this. any help would be appreciated

(290 360 10.0 1-4 Ford 0WM-4/SM 0WA-4/AUTO)

I have run a lot of Ford 4300's so now & then I obtain an AMC 4300.
AFAIK, AMC used the Carter AFB thru 1969, then went to the Autolite 4300.
Ford made 2 sizes for the 4300:
1.00" venturi, about 440cfm
IIRC this was only used from 1967-69.
1.25" venturi, about 600cfm
This was used from 1968-1974.

In the AMC numbering, 1st digit is the year, 3rd digit is a=auto or m=manual, and I think last digit means 4bbl.
I've had:
3tm4
3ta4
4ta4

I don't know what the 2nd digit "T" vs your "W" means.
All the 1.25" venturi Autolite 4300's are the same CFM so I bet any of them would be legal, the only diff is jets & air bleeds etc.

Have a friend who moved to Phoenix a while back with 2 AMC's. Isn't this the same 600 cfm carb on a 70/71 351 Ford?

0 = 1970 W = engine size M = Manual & A = Automatic 4 = 4V

i think it is the same 600cfm carb that ford used and that being the case do you guys have a builder you would suggest? i know Deano is the man on quadrajets , so who knows autolites also makes me wonder if there is a quickfuel or replacement option but i haven't seen one.

it would be great if i could use any 600cfm carb i wanted.

Somewhere before or by the early 70"s I recall my boxes going from Autolite to Motorcraft at the local Ford dealer.

during the 60's Ford used Autolite as a trade name for a lot of parts. The government for some reason sued Ford and made them sell the spark plug division so Ford started using Motorcraft for their parts and Fram/Allied Signal ended up with Autolite.

The best Autolite Carb guy I know is George Thompson "Carburetor Flow
Engineering". I can look up his number if you want. His cars are always
near the top of the field out here in the West!

Got that right Greg !
The OWA4 /OWM4 is a Motorcraft 4300. A temperamental sumbitch of a carb that works good with a stick and fair on a 2 step automatic . unpredictable on a foot brake .
Most Ford 351 racers run the Holley where it's accepted as a replacement and take the HP ,but a few stick racers run it successfully.
Deuce Coupe has the correct info on the sizes and GTX John is right ,Thompson did the carb I ran on my D/S Automatic '70 AMX, Worked as good as you can get from that carb.
