Touching the car during the burnout. Now o/k?

After watching almost 90 pro stock burnouts this weekend i see it is now o/k to hold a vehicle strait during the burnout. This is a great thing. Now we dont have to worry about going sideways when we come out of the water box. Now if we can just get the rider in the passenger seat rule revised so we can use spotters that would be great.....

since a lot of the water boxes in D1 are worn out with ruts 4" deep
[ Cecil Co, Maple Grove ] This is great news, as a cost saving measure for the tracks not having to replace worn out concrete, I'm sure they'll pass the savings on to the racers.

The chance of getting part of your clothing caught on the wing or something coming off the rear tire is so slim that there is really nothing to worry about. I am sure Rick has already considered this when implementing the new rule.

Good example of keeping the burnout area clear.Atco last year,a T/S car doing a burnout
lost a collector.He ran it over,flattening it into a samuari sword.It hit a spectator standing
off to the side and fileted a spectators leg,then hit another and blasted his knee cap.
BTW,has any body heard how they made out?I know the second victim.
This is a very dangerous sport.

Ed, Are talking about Eddy Goggle Eyes? He got hit by a collector, it mess up his knee, but he said also that when it hit his foot is when it hurt the worse.

Casey,I'm not sure.I was sitting in the stands abot 25' away and just saw a guy holding a jacket against his leg.He went to move it and when he did it looked like a pretty big chunk of meat was gone.
Dave LeClair was the guy whacked in the shin or knee cap.It wasn't a pretty sight.Guess they're both OK now I hope.

Once upon a time there was no such thing as a stationary burnout...

Around 1969 or 1970 when the soft compound tires showed up....(Firestones) for automatic trans stockers mostly.......stationary burnouts started to be common. There was no real burnout box where water was supplied. You just picked a spot and did it....

We tried some Firestone tires at the first SummerNationals at York....1970. We borrowed them from Frank Iaconio

These tires were supposed to be "burned in" and they were new.

I held the back of our car so it would stay straight.......Burned the doodoo out of my ankles on that run..... little hot black rubber bits embedded in my ankles....

SS'ers were doing crazy burnouts in the staging lanes way before the starting line.....I can recall it was like a joke to see who could make the most smoke.......No water.....just spin the tires.....

When I started racing they did burnouts in bleach. Not sure who was the wizard that thought that was a great idea.

I think the practice is plain stupid. Its dangerous and an accident waiting to happen. And what about the guy in the front of the car when the burnout is being done? The guy with his foot in the groove where he wants the burnout tracks to be? That guy is inches from getting hit every time and I will never understand that.
