Default 283 head gasket???

I am bulding a 283 for super stock and need some head gasket advice. I would like to find some steel shim small bore gaskets if possible. Fel pro currently has a steel shim gasket but it has a 4.100 bore.

On the GM gaskets if the parts guy will let you look thru the stack "Mic" them all and you might find some as thin as .020-.021"---Comp 387

Use the gasket that was made for a 283, Stock GM #3995633. They are slightly smaller in the bore and usually measure around .021". I just bought some late this summer, so they are still available.

Jerry is correct regarding the bore size. I have a set for sale if you need them. Send me a PM if interested.

Cometic makes any bore size. I use them on our 283 stocker.

3995633 is the gasket to use, Jerry correct me here but I think that gasket is for a 307. But
they are still available and can be stacked if needed without any problem. I remember the
last batch that I bought being .017 but that was several years ago.

Thanks for the help, I figured someone would have the correct part number for the small bore gasket.
Anyone have a good pan for a chevelle? GOOD!

Hi Joe,

Been awhile. You're right. The 3995633 has been listed as the 307 (Chev) gasket for years. I've had them as thin as .016" metal thickness, but they always check at around .020 - 021" in the bead area after they've been compressed. You're also right about the stacking Joe. We went to aluminum rods in a Super Mod years ago with 14.5 to Compression. Of course we needed the extra clearance, and nobody made a race gasket at the time, so we took the advice from Da Grump himself and stacked them. Very fast car for it's day, and never a problem.
