Here is the email exchange I just had with D1 Tech Director Ryck Campbell -

Hello Ryck - I have a tech question. I am upgrading from a roll bar to a roll cage in my bracket car. The car runs in the 10.50's @ 128 with no immediate plans of going much faster. With the upgrade to a roll cage and knowing that the car does not require a cage, will I be required to install and use a window net? I thought the rule book (General Section 6:3) was sort of vague stating any car REQUIRED TO HAVE CAGE must use a net. Any clarification would be helpful, thanks....>> Joe Grippo

Joe, If a roll cage is not mandatory then neither is the window net. Remember that the roll cage requirement for full bodied cars with tops is 10.00 et or 135 mph and for full bodied convertibles is 10.99 et or 135 mph.>> thanks,>> Ryck Campbell

Thanks for the quick response Ryck. So, even though based on et, the car does not need a cage but I am putting one in anyway, I am not required to have a window net.Thanks so much for the clarification. Joe Grippo

Joe, That's correct, if your car has a roof and you don't go quicker than 10.00 et or faster than 135mph. If you are racing a convertible, that it's quicker that 10.99et or faster than 135mph. Ryck Campbell NHRA, Northeast Division Technical Director

I have been told exactly what Ed said. If you have a cage but its not required
based on class or et then you don't need a window net.

I believe this is another of those rules
that are at the discretion of the tech guy
or gal at the time.

We must of had the same tech guy as Terry Cain.
I was told that if the car has a cage it has to
have a window net regardless of et.

I'm suprised by Rycks response,but I guess things change.
Several years ago I built a Stocker with a cage for a class that did not require one , the owner was told at that time he had to use the window net regardless of how fast he was going.
Regardless ,I would want one anyway,when properly installed they really aren't that bad. ...Especially the mesh type. ....Whats an arm worth now days?
[ except mabe a tank of gas!]

Probably right. I was just looking for clarification.
I have already bought one so I'll probably use it....Better to have it and not need it....

I'm glad this thread was started because I bought a stocker that has a full cage and window net. I asked the previous owner about the net and he said he never used it and no one ever said anything. With all the different responses, I'm still not sure if I have to use it. Guess I'll ask Travis at Indy divisional.

I run SS/JA, I have a cage that is certified to 8.50. Not required in my class, nor is a net, multi layer suit, neck collar, gloves or license, unless I run nines or 135 MPH, or move up to SS/IA. I race everywhere, both associations, never one word said about the net not being installed. It rides in the trailer with the neck collar.

I have to agree with Ed, I run in Division 1 and 2, Lucas and Nationals, I have a cage no net in SS/MA, no one has ever said I need a net, just went through tech at the Gators today, again no problems.

My understanding is that a cage does not automatically require a net. If it did, why aren't you required to have the rest of the safety gear a 9.99 or 135 triggers as that's when you need the net?

In the same vein though, I've seen tech tell people with a roll bar in a car that runs high 11's they have to run a 5 point harness. Take the bar out and your 40 year old seat belts are good to go. I really can't figure that one out.
