A little AFB without the weights used in the 361/305, 383s and street wedges flowed 566 on my flow bench. The inline carbs I have 3258 and 3259 flowed 445 and 450 giving almost 900 CFM to those 343 cars. The 383/343 would be an excellent choice in GT with a low profile mani similar to those used on a SS Street Hemi. Paul, how fast were the 361/305 cars going back then.

Just imagine,,,,,,,,

Dave Kempton and Doug Kahl switched to C/SA in 1966,,,,,,,
with the 383/343 HP engine,,,,,,,,

Because they thought the 13.05 National Record for C/SA at the
beginning of the year was 'SOFT'.....

and they were sure they could get the 62' 383/343 cars into the 12.90's.

National Records;
C/SA,,,,,,,,12.97,,,,,,(5/66),,,'The Lively Ones',,,,1964 Ford Galaxie 427/410 HP
C/SA,,,,,,109.35 MPH,,,,,(8/66),,,,'Fastback Club of Dearborn',,,1964 Ford Galaxie 427/410 HP

Now mid 10.60's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Yeah...We see them at 3 or 4 Div. 5 races and know them well. I've seen the car run 10.86 at CFR at E wt. The've run D E F and they probably ran it light in good air with a dead hook. I did'nt see it but it's capable.

At the end of 1965, the 'Top' 383/343 HP cars were running 13.10's.

The 361/305 HP cars, the 'Top' cars were hitting 13.50's.

The National Record at the beginning of 1966 in D/SA was 13.52 @ 102.38 MPH (1962 Dodge 'Polara 500',,, 361/305 HP)

But the new challenger in D/SA, were the 65' and 66' 289/271 HP 'HiPo' Mustangs.

A 65' 289/271 'HiPo' Mustang won the D/SA Class at the Indy Nationals in 1966.

The guys running the 361/305 cars felt the 13.50 range was as about as fast as you could go,,,,,,
thats why many switched to the 383/343 engine (and one class lower).

361/305 HP and 383/343 HP Confusion,,,,,,,,,

Let me try to explain the Dave Kempton and Doug Kahl class confusion.

NHRA Classes;
1963/1964/1965
C/SA Weight Factor was (10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp)

The 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury and 1962 Dodge Polara 500 with the
361/305 HP engine combination fell into C/SA.

Both Doug Kahl (1965 World Champion) and Dave Kempton (1965 Winternationals Junior Stock Champion) campaigned in C/SA with
the 361/305 HP 1962 Sport Fury's.

They had also run this combination in 1963 and 1964.

In 1966, the NHRA bumped up the classes 'one-notch', and C/SA was now D/SA, and B/SA was now C/SA.

Both Doug Kahl and Dave Kempton switched to the 383/343 HP
engine combination, after the 1966 Winternationals....

At the 66' Winternationals, they both ran the 361/305 HP combination, but in the 'New' D/SA Class

They were running the 383/343 HP combination at the 66' Springnationals.

In 1966, they were classed in C/SA, but the weight factor of the class
was 9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp.

What confuses everyone is the C/SA Class.
They both kept the same cars, but switched from the 361/305 HP engine to the 383/343 HP engine in 1966.
They were still running C/SA in 1966, but the weight factors had changed.

Talking Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'

Paul ,I really enjoy your threads, and this one is on a combo that is special to me.
my uncle ,Jack Troxell raced a 62 Ply Wagon and a 62 Dodge Cp with this combo very sucessfully in the late '60s and I spent so much time helping on it , I went out and bought a '62 Dodge wagon and built my own using his cast off parts.
Was'nt as cool to my High School friends as my '50 Olds convert it replaced, but it kicked a lot more butt!

Out of 25 or so cars I've owned over the years ,that car is on the top 5 list I'd like to have back.

I think this photo is from '69 since the car is classed as a G/SA

Out of curiosity, I have wondered if those with experience with BB MoPars would ever consider some of the odd 2-4 engines with short ram manifolds from 1960 and 61 for SS/GT. Especially the 361 and 413 engines.

Those would have to be fair to good combinations because the the limiting factor (intake manifold) is out of the picture in superstock. I just wonder how they would police carburetor placement on an manufactured manifold.

I was also wondering about this as well...curious if edelbrock has any plans to remake an aluminum 2x4 dual carb intake...because NHRA is allowing aluminum heads on most stockers now, (supposedly)...so maybe they could reproduce an aluminum 2x4 dual carb intake that replaces the factory iron unit...or is this just wishful thinking.
