MSD 8732 2 step sporadic fail
Has anyone experienced and fixed the sporadic 2 step not working when you least expect it?
I have 2 friends that have also had the issue. This has happened on my 68 Camaro, as well as my S10. My S10 has a 1 year old 8732 that I bought new. Both have the newer digital 6AL. In order to prevent it, I've had very good success turning the dials prior to every run. One friend added the MSD noise filter and hasnt had the issue since, so I added one in the S10 last week. No issues on Saturday with 5 runs and not touching the 2 step. Today, bam in round 2.... Straight to the converter. Thank you, Clark |

Best way to fix that POS is a hammer skillfully applied to the face a minimum of 3 times.

I've experienced that too. I wasn't sure if it was the 2 step or the brake pressure switch. I put in a different type of pressure switch and haven't had a problem, but then I haven't put very many runs on it either.

Re: MSD 8732 2 step sporadic fail
MY setup - Old 6AL and 2 step using old Ford brake pressure sw - Has been working without fail for 10 years - Can't help with the digital - but seems like the ignition box isn't the problem - the 2 step or its activation is!

Re: MSD 8732 2 step sporadic fail
I put a very small LED light on the dash that is wired to the 2 step activation wire at the 2 step. It lets me know I have enough pressure on the brakes and that the 2 step is getting power. I have had it go straight to the converter and that is why I put that light on. In my case it was a failed connection but I could have seen it and saved the round possibly. Only other time I had problems was when the chip fell out of the 2 step. Makes you wonder why they didn't make a retainer for the chip. Now I have a zip tie around it and tape, very professuional looking.

I like the LED idea.
This is the 2 step with no chip which is only on the 6425 Digital 6AL. https://www.jegs.com/i/MSD-Ignition/121/8732/10002/-1 |

Re: MSD 8732 2 step sporadic fail
Just prior to staging, I put my cars in neutral/Apply Brake/Check two step.
Many of my sporadic problems have been in connections = defective plug in wiring on MSD. Their quality is not what it used to be! My .02

Re: MSD 8732 2 step sporadic fail
After talking to MSD for the 5th year in a row, we got hold of a different tech.
Will see.... Last edited by cad; 07-06-2020 at 03:45 PM. |
