Default Maybe Im a dummy

Where can I find casting numbers for blocks and heads in the nhra website or rule book for acceptable heads and block for chev 454 450 horse combo. Can i use alum. heads with this engine any other info is greatly appreciated

Dustin, on the NHRA website, look for the link at the top that says "rules", under that you'll see the stock car classification guide, and the engine blueprint specifications. In the engine blueprint specifications you'll see what castings you can use, and what the specifications are. In the classification guide you'll see what the NHRA HP ratings are. I'd say that if you can use the aluminum heads, it'll increase the NHRA HP rating.

Im just not seeing it in the mess of numbers on that page. I see volumes and intake#'s and such. we are building a 454 450 horse combo any help is appreciated.

Not positive but the casting numbers I have for a 1970 454/450 LS6 Chevelle/Malibu engine are as follows
Block---3963512
Cylinder head--3964291 or 3964292
Camshaft---3863143
Crankshaft---3963523
Intake manifold--3963569

Dustin I am always quick to help another fellow Texan (although I how reside in Florida).
As far as I know the alum. cylinder head was not available with the 454 engine on any
combination. According to the "rule book" casting #'s 840 291 858 and 391 are all legal
heads for stock. I think the 291 gets the nod in that group....maybe. Intakes listed are the factory 3963569 with alternates 3967474 3933163 and 1913359. With the 3933163 probably the best choice. If I were you I'd call Larry Owens at Owens Automotive on Maple Ave. in Dallas. He is a wiz on the big block stuff and has raced those things for 40 years. His business number is in the phone book. As far as the blocks go the 427 or 454
blocks will both work. I don't know if the later "Bow Tie" blocks are legal in stock. Larry will
know, call him. Just a warning, be prepared to talk a while. Hope I helped.

I will give him a call thanks for that. Surley we can replace the cast crank with a forged one at least. Thats alot to ask of a cast crank.

Dustin. Only a GM crank is legal (the regular GM crank is either 1053 or 5140, the usual forging number is 7416). You may run any one of several aftermarket rods, the Eagle H beam rod with either an ARP 2000 or ARP L-19 bolt is common. There is an accepted connecting rod list on the website.

Reggie is correct, the 291, 391, 858, and 840 heads are legal. It really depends on the castings themselves, any of those numbers can be a good casting, the 291 is most common. The others most often came with a 1.725" exhaust valve, but your engine will be able to run the 1.88" exhaust valve. So, if you find a good set of the earlier heads with small exhaust valves, you get to start fresh with a very high seat.

The new 359 is a good intake, but if memory serves correct, you can run the 163 intake with a large cut in the plenum. The 359 does not have that cut, and it is not legal to cut it.

As far as I know, you can run the Bow Tie replacement block, be aware it costs about $2200. Any two piece rear seal 454 or 427 block can be used, I'd pour it with Hard Blok. As well as bush the lifter bores and align hone it.

The JE and CP pistons are the most common, you can find them on the approved piston list.

The cam can have any duration or lobe separation angle, but is limited to 0.520" lift at the valve.
