Default Mag Wheels

I have an old set of Motor Wheel Corp. Fly's that I would like to put on my race car but a friend told me that real magnesium wheels are no longer legal. I couldn't find anything about this in the rule book.

Is this true?

Bobby, I havn't specificaly seen anything saying you can't use them. However, I've had quite a few set of mag MotorWheels over the years, and ALL of them had cracks. ......They are certanly the neatest looking, lightest wheels ever made, but is your safety and your race car worth it? ..........Those wheels belong on a show car,not a modern racer , besides, do you really want to have to polish them every time you take the car out?..........Tom

You're right Tom, when polished they're killer but almost immeditely the shine starts laying down. A week later they are dull. Two weeks later they are almost black.

But if legal, I would like to put them on the front and just leave them natural. Not become a slave to them.

If I really had a fast car I might not trust them, but unfortunetly I don't.

A broken front wheel will wreck a 100MPH stocker just like it will a 130MPH stocker. And it might wreck two cars.

2 cars are running them right now in NHRA. Rowe from St louis area with a L/SA mustang and Richard Feldman with the SS/O Impala. Mike Mckinney wrecked his SS/IA firebird several years ago after a wheelstand with them.

Motor Wheel "Fly"fronts are wrought magnesium, the rears are aluminum. I have had mine for years with no problems with either pair. You can stop the fronts from oxidizing by "spinning" them on a lathe using 180 grit emery cloth to bring back the original finish. Then spray a coat of good satin clear on them. They look real sharp. Unfinished they will oxidize almost immediately & turn black. They are still legal to use as far as I know & I intent to keep using mine as they are in my opinion still the coolest looking around. Not the highest tech wheels out there anymore though. Bogart makes a similar wheel called the flystar,I believe.

Wheelstands were what always killed mine. .......1/8 mile slow car? maby. ....I'd still look for a set of Bogarts or Streaker copies, if this is the style that you really want. .....The problem I had with one pair is that they cracked on the inside of the spoke facing the epoxy filler, so I didn't catch it until the car developed a severe vibration. ........I think the manufacturers are missing the boat in not making a copy of this style. They are all jumping on the retro bandwagon in one way or another, I think a wheel that copied the looks of a fly/flea wheel would be a good seller. .......Tom
