Default SS modified

SS/AM..... SS/AS ect....front wheel drive conversions can fab a nice front end system but for rear wheel drive it says...."or may utilize a NHRA accepted front suspension. aftermarket steering permitted."

This is a "gray" area and I know what I want to do, do I need an approval or just build it?

Thanks Bill

It is a grey area, but the guy to answer would be Ed Quay, if he still has a listed number. He quit doing cars, but did more rear wheel cars then anyone. He did one for us years ago, but would always answer any questions about anybody's chassis. Or try East Texas, B&B, or Wisecarver. They will come nearer to knowing then a random NHRA guy.

Have fought this with NHRA for the past 3 years to no avail and my last proposal, was also shut down. In a nutshell, any OEM RWD car must keep the original, as delivered, suspension system, including control arms and front shock configuration. You can only modify the OEM cross member as shown and described in the regular RWD Super Stock car rules.

There are a lot of aftermarket suspension systems with fabricated cross members and lower control arms; however, they are not allowed even if you send a request for approval. They will not even allow an aftermarket cross member with the OEM upper/lower control arms.

However, if you build a FWD, that is a different story and they allow fabricated components in accordance to the rules.

Just check out some of the FWD cars with 25.3 and 25.5 SFI chassis and you will notice they are the closest thing to a Comp car.

Thanks, that is my point and I would like it to fit into A/SM comp also, very similar front end rules (at least typed out rules)

Guess that's why the FWD conversions are popular

They may be similar, however, you are allowed to do more on a RWD car in Comp than in SS Modified.

That is my point, when you get to where you need a 25. ( ) whatever spec chassis the front suspension should be taken into consideration also....160+ approaching 170 mph

This is where the "approved" aftermarket front end needs a serious look

Yes it has never seemed right to me that the older RWD cars that race the FWD conversions cannot make the same changes to the front ends.

The current Super Stock Modified rules, although it says "Approved" aftermarket front end, there is not a single aftermarket offering that has been accepted for a RWD car. Yes, there is a lot of "Creativity" I have seen in some RWD cars that in the spirit of the rule book guidance, does not meet the current rule or is borderline. I believe those cars have not been inspected thoroughly by Tech or they decided to let it go.

On the other hand, for Comp Eliminator Super Modified class, as applicable to RWD cars, the rules say the following:

RWD must retain complete OEM stock front-suspension system or may utilize generally available aftermarket steel front-suspension components (i.e., upper and lower control/A-arms, springs, fasteners, rods, etc. similar to the original/stock components. Mounting points must remain in original location. The use of adjustable heim (or heim-type) joints permitted.

So, it is clear the distinction between the SS Modified and the Comp Super Modified rules as regards to the allowance of aftermarket front suspension components.
