Many would debate you about that manifold statement. People around here ( Div 4) would likely tell you different. Butch Lake and Carroll Caudle had the first two I ever saw, can't remember which was first. Butch Lake, I think. Hard to say who in the U.S. Did it first. Vic Edelbrock took Carroll's home with him after the World Finals to use for prototype work the winter before they released their first version. They sent him one before Pomona. There is more to this, but would take up too much room here.

I thought his wins were after the demise of Modified.

I did too. He was a very nice guy with very clean cars, but was not yet real fast the last year I raced. Mike Edwards was World Champ the year after I quit, and then they killed off Modified the next year. That's how I remember it, anyway. Remember, I'm old. :-)

I think Carroll Caudle might be my choice. Sure could make the small cube engines sing.

I think it was Indy he won against Dick Landy's Hemi Dart in the final, Carroll in C/MP, and Landy in B/MP. They ran about the same MPH. Landy's Hemi couldn't pull on Carroll's 331" sbc in high gear. National Dragster called it his flying shoe box (1955 Chevy Belair 2dr hard top)
Gwenda's (his wife) office desk had one of those spikes for receipts, etc, it was filled about half way up with national record certificates. This was about 1972?
All that with T10 trannys & '57 Pontiac rear ends, Lakewood traction bars, 90/10 front shocks, and 7" Firestones on 4" wheels. lol

Trying to close his shop down and retire right now. Anybody need a nice building with machine shop, dyno, and mechanic's shop in downtown Amarillo Texas?

There is a picture of that '55 (he still has it) on my facebook page. Think there is a picture of his Don Hardy M/P Vega he built later on there too.
