Default approved race fuels experience

Racers,

up to this point, I have been running the Sunoco Standard Purple for one simple reason. The Sunoco wholesale distributor is four miles from my shop. [Lonestar Super Fuels, Kilgore TX]

However, we are now to the point of having the basic package worked out and are moving toward getting up-to-speed on all the fine tuning items.

So, fuel is on my question list.

Larry,
Does your fuel warehouse handle any other brands?
The Purple Standard is a pretty good fuel. You might get some more power out of a slightly lower octane. The following spec is what is shown for the purple:
Motor 105 R+m/2 110 Research 117 Octane Diff 12 Spec. G. .725 Reid V.P 8 Dia. -.05
To get a better low compression fuel you would need C-11 It has a lower octane & the Octane difference is only 2 which makes it a little more stable & a higher quality fuel. It's specs are:
Motor 104 R+M/2 106 Research 110 Octane diff. 2 Spe. G .717
Lead 4.23 Reid V.P N/A Dia. -1.1

Fuel is just something you need to test to see what your combo likes, Esp in your low compression engine. Some fuels might look good on paper, but might not like your combustion chamber, spark plug locartion, Piston shape, RPM,ect, ect. There is not a one fuel does all, that I know of... guess that is one reason VP markets over 54 different types/blends.

Adger is right, some engines seem to be quicker on C-11, especially those that don't need the octane of C-12 or similar fuels. The only drawback is we've found C-11 to be rather nasty and impure. Maybe that's just something that went on for a while around here. But the whole fuel system looks better and stays cleaner on C-12.

Larry,

Most low compression motors will run quicker on C-11 than C-12 or Purple, etc. But, you will have to re-jet and find what it wants.

I ran different carbs and different fuels on back to back tests with my 305 motor and also the 350 motor I got from Chip. The 305 motor I had was a good one, and with same carb, just jetting changes, I saw .05 better with c-11 over c-12. This came at the expense of a much more expensive fuel, C-11 cost about half again as much, and it is a real pain to keep. I had to drain cell, or seal cell between races, and even when you take samples at track, cover, keep out of light, etc. Seems to flash off and change very quick. Most will tell you to get small quanities from someone you know has fresh fuel, etc. Just some of the fun of going fast.

I know everyone has opinions and stories, this is just what I saw.

I know you have done a lot of work to the old Nova since I have seen it. Glad to hear you are getting it where you want it.

I ran some fuel a few years ago that smelled REAL BAD that worked great. Anyone remember what it was called?
I do remember NHRA made it illegal.

when going from c-12 to c-11 would you need to go richer or leaner?
