SURE ENOUGH !
No. 3 intake ... Schubeck lifter... "puck" shattered.
hasn't run long since it happened, but I can see that the fragments would have went EVERYWHERE.

This block is honed to the size limit.
Would this crap have damaged cylinder walls ?

Aubrey, it will kill cylinder walls. Wrecks the pistons too. You do know that the limit is now 0.075", and not 0.070".

I lost one on the dyno. It didn't run 10 seconds after it popped. The block was .060, and it took .100 to clean it up. Brenda Grubbs lost one as she started the car in the pits....didn't run 5 seconds. It took one sleeve and a new set of pistons, plus new hone to get it back together. Good luck with your engine. Alan gave you good advice about lifters. They are the best available today.

I once had the Scubeck fully composite bodied lifters. Lost one on about the eigth run. Shattered like glass all over the place. I pulled the engine, dropped the pan and intake and used a case of Brake Kleen in order to make a race the following weekend. Bad move. Lost oil pressure and ring seal. I had another engine loose the puck, like yours. Broke the camshaft, lost a pair or pistons and rods as a result. I had Shermans and they cupped almost instantly. I had my machinest build me some using ductile iron solids converted to quasi hydraulic (because if Schubeck can get away with it why can't I?). Geez, didn't have any problems there but in the end I went with another set of Schubecks on a billet cam. Yea, very pricey!
I've had oiling problems I've rectified as well. But not without penalty along the way. Just as you, I took an unknown (AMC) and made it one of the baddest Stockers out there. Just as you with your 409, it's a long road. Either you overcome adversity or you bail. Anybody can put together a 305 or 350 (not picking on anybody, just an example), but you chose the unknown. That's the charm for Stock, either you got what it takes or you don't!
I say sell that Jaguar and buy new parts!

Jeff... it's doubtful that your middle name is subtle ... is it ? ! ! !

To the point... and even in that, you think I should continue ? !

Sell the Jag ?
I don't think so !
In the States, you guys couldn't get a series III V12 Vanden Plas. In Canada, they made up about half of Jag's sales here ! ... 87, factory black prairie car, factory Dayton 70 spoke wire wheels...
nope, no can sell !

But all is not as bleak as it was thought it could be.
Heads are off ( I sure wouldn't be able to use the excuse that it takes too long to tear down ! ).

Heads, valves.... un-marked... REALLY good actually.
Camshaft ?... damn near survived ! ground up a bit on the edge of a lobe, but it didn't lose one.
Reciprocating assembly still spins very nicely... no "tight spots".

Cylinder walls ?
Yeah, there's SOME scoring on one side inmost of them ( opposite thrust ).
Nothing really ugly though.
I've been doing engines a LONG time, and I think these, for the most part, will hone out.
It'll DEFINITELY end up at the bitter edge though. I'm at around .071"-.072" now.

I AM a little worried about the crank. Spent a good sum of money on indexing / balance... now .010" / .020".
Main bearings in anything more than .010", are VERY difficult to find. oh... and they're almost $300 !

Oh... Jeff... it should be pointed out...
The problems I'm having, have NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a 409.
The parts that are defective / inopperative / failing... are the BS race car parts ONLY !
In fact, the only thing that is still really good about the car, is the very near rust free, original paint body, and some VERY fine W block castings / forgings !

"Either you overcome adversity or you bail"
you can ask my friends if I've been know to overcome adversity !

I was ready to part this thing out ( race parts FIRST ! ).
But it looks like I got lucky ( tongue in cheek sort of way ).

I'll probably be out for the remainder of the season, but I'm not going to quit ( lack of common sense being the likely reason ).

Jaguar would have sold them here in the USA...if they thought there were buyers!

....that's because...your Canadians!

Sorry...just a bit of my "subtle" humor!

Actually Jeff, you guys didn't get them, because the V12 didn't meet the emission / fuel economy standards, and Jaguar would have had to pay a very hefty tarrif in order to market them in the U.S..
( this car gets about 18 MP U.S. gallon on the highway )

In 1985, I was looking at a black 72 V12 E Type at the Jag dealer in Edmonton. The dealership owner took my 64 Parisienne Custom Sport ( 300HP 327 4 speed ) for drive. Came back, and offered me a job !
I actually completed the last two years of my apprenticeship ( 85/86 ) at that Jag dealer !

but enough of that

Drained the oil today. Cut open the oil filter...
No problems so far.
Geez...
maybe my luck is FINALLY going to change ?!

Aubrey, I really hate the problems you are having. These cam lifter deals are getting crazy. I just changed the cam in my Buick and have been holding my breath that I don't loose a lobe. Like you I have never had a cam on an engine I built go down but with all this oil stuff and the quality of parts I'm running a little scared. The real killer is when these high dollar "race parts" are what's killing you. I admire what you are doing and wish you the best of luck. I want to build a Buick SS/GT car but know I would be beating my head aganist the wall. I will stick to the Nostalgia index stuff for now.
