Default '67 RC426 Race Hemi bellhousing/starter problem

I've got a 67 RO/WO RC426 Steel Hemi bellhousing (1st pic) I'd like to install in a 68 street hemi. got the 172 tooth 11" flywheel, direct drive starter (3rd pic) but have run into a little snag. The top bolt of the starter attaches to the bellhousing via a 7/16 stud installed in the bell. Problem is the only way to secure the starter at the bottom is with a fine thread 7/16 bolt thru the bell into the starter from the back. Check out the 2nd pic. There isn't room for a bolt head, hex or allen, against the bellhousing and I don't want to take the grinder to this valuable, rare piece. Anyone know what was used for tightening the bottom of the starter to the bellhousing with? any insight greatly appreciated.

sounds like they used a double ended threaded stud with the appropriate thread size screwed into the block then position the starter to the bell housing and use a nut to finally secure the starter

problem is there is no mounting flange on the bottom of these starters accessable from the front...the bottom fastener must screw directly into the starter from the back not thru a flange like on the regular gear reduction starter.

Have you fixed the problem yet...you could use an allen key round head bolt.

yep I've got the glitch licked. thanks for the pointers folks. The allen head bolt works it I do some grinding on it. I sure am curious what fastener was actually used in 67. The street hemi bells use bolts top and bottom and there is clearance for the bolt head on those bells whereas on my race hemi bell there isn't. weird.

Hey Dave
Are you sure that your starter is for a street hemi & not for a 426 wedge in a truck applicatiion or something. Seems to me that the industrial versions had the bottom bolt had the head on the rear side of the bellhousing& threaded into the starter????

Daryl, that very well could be the case...I'm going to Saskatoon tomorrow and can check out a pal's 69 hemi 4 spd car, his still has all of the original parts it was born with. thx for the headsup. Merry Xmas to you , your better half and the rest of the Oakbank Timing Association.
