Default 12 Bolt Rearend Lube?

Alright, we are changing gears and would like some input on what is the best, least resistance, gear lube everyone is using these days. Thanks! Drew Whalen

I saw this post earlier but wanted to give some thought to my comments. I suppose, this issue would be difficult to test.

However, Good gear and bearing life can be had with a premium GL5 rated 80/90 conventional gear oil. But ,the same can be said for a premium synthetic oil. I think personal preference might be hard to separate from fact about gear oil. Much like it is with engine oil. [smile]

Also, For the 12 bolt housing, one quart is plenty of oil for drag racing.

I have always been a GL-5 dino oil guy myself, but was impressed with the Red-Line "climbing gear lube" that one of my customers has been using. Talking about a Pro-gear, car running 8.60's at over 3200 lbs. He gets 300+ runs from a gear set.

My only ever gear failure was with synthetic lube, can't remember right off which brand, and I feel it had nothing to do with the failure, probably just a fluke that it happened that way. I use street gears in mine, with minimal backlash. I tried the synthetic for off the trailer bracket racing consistency, did not discern any advantage or disadvantage. Seems to make more difference with the Phord and big Dana units.

Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 is my personal choice. Amsoil formulates an outstanding line of lubricants, especially gear lube. http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?z...storefront/SVG

There are some gear lubes out there that flow like 20wt motor oil, but I've never personally tried them. Anyone have any experience with these "qualifier' type lubes?

We're using the Richmond blue synthetic, or the GM synthetic. Cars roll free, and coast down slowly.

Billy, I think we may be talking about over 200 hp here.
You mean I can get rid of my "stick shift" setup now?
