Default The Split

Who has "split" in NHRA racing? It's pretty well known in bracket racing circles only because of the top-heavy purses, but isn't that the same thing when it comes to losing in the semifinals of a national event? This story ran last year but it's still relevant today. Your thoughts?

The actual purse money isn't enough to bother with, and there are too many variables to consider with contingency (some cars are stickered up vs some that aren't, are the companies actually going to pay, etc) that I don't know how you'd figure out a decent split.

In a bracket race where all the money is clearly defined? Absolutely but if so, that's an indictment of the promoter's purse structure.

Only time I was asked to split was at an IHRA race. I had never heard of that. Thought it was just an IHRA deal. Guess it's a bracket race deal.

I split one time, it was at an IHRA Sportsman Spectacular race. $5000 to win, $1500 RU seemed like a good deal considering the top heavy purse and my rear main seal was already leaking oil lol. Wouldn't even bother doing it with a regular purse I just want the Wally anyway.

I have been offered several times but the only time I did was at a practice tree race in November and it worked out in my favor. In 09 when I was in the finals at Pomona for the Summit Championship where it is a winner take all ($5,000.00) and I declined. I did lose but have never regretted not splitting. I believe all the other times I declined it worked in my favor. I've been told that not splitting when asked was poor sportsmanship. I don't see it that way at all. However I always offer my opponent lane choice.

When the blue chip guys get to the end I think splits happen between them sometimes. Not for the regular hobby/part time racer.

One of these days at an NHRA event I would love to be in a position to be asked whether I want to split or not.....LOL

When I bracket race I normally don't turn down a split at the semis or finals level
