Re: transmission shield required is stock
Anybody with experience using the Tom Waters shield on a 904? Want to avoid a repeat of a bad experience trying to mount a TCI shield in an A body years ago, lots of notching/trimming required which of course rendered the classification spec useless.

Re: transmission shield required is stock
Several years ago at Mission, Dan Cyrs A/SA 69 Camaro had an automatic transmission explosion so severe that it sent scrapnel up through the dashboard and out the windshield. Pretty scary stuff. Thay worked late into the night patching up the damage and installing a new windshield, and did race the next day. I have also seen the aftermath of several Torqueflights and Turbo 400s that blew apart, easily as bad as a clutch explosion on a stick car, but normally further back, and closer to the driver, and often in an area where the tunnel has been modified.

Re: transmission shield required is stock
I have the full carbon fiber CSR shield on the Volare. The transmission tunnel is tight, and it barely fits, but it fits. We use the star head pattern bolts (fir head?) that use a 3/8" 12-point socket, a good swivel, a 3' extension, and as SS3011 said, the trick is to let the engine and trans down as far as it will go to give yourself enough clearance to have a prayer of getting to the bolts. I remove the trans mount, pop the distributor cap off and lower the engine and trans down as far as they will go -- the engine lays back very close to the firewall. With the right tools and a lot of practice (which I have gotten over the years, unfortunately), it's not as much of a completely god-awful job as it used to be.
And yes, it required taking a couple of ears off the trans to make the shield fit.

Re: transmission shield required is stock
They list it as an "aerospace composite". Whatever it is, it is TOUGH!

Re: transmission shield required is stock
I have a CSR shield in a 69 Barracuda on a 904. The shield fits the transmission very well after trimming the ears off.
It took a lot of work to get it to fit the car. It is nice that they will re-certify them. That being said the Tom Waters shield looks very nice. Bill |

I think I have a new-in-the-box-904-CSR. Somebody need it? Boy that is a long word.

It was just as the car came out of the burnout box and sent parts everywhere. Quite a bunch of damage to the car and maybe just luck the parts went straight up and straight down rather than out the sides , Dan can still walk. |
