To clear it up, the heads Chris was running should have been submitted to NHRA by Ford Racing. Whether it was a typing error or a missed casting number I'm not sure, but it has been updated. There is no performance advantage, just a clerical mistake that unfortunately wasn't caught prior to a teardown. We have now submitted all known casting numbers that are currently available and any superseded casting numbers expected to be available for the 5.0L through 2013 calendar year.
The Cobra Jet has been the most torn-down vehicle make/model over the last 4 years. With success this is expected. In the vast majority of cases our racers pass easily. There have been some growing pains in understanding how NHRA wants the specifications and their range of allowable tolerances and we have learned and improved our process along the way. Continual improvement is in our DNA for the Cobra Jet. Beyond Cobra Jet we have had many corrections to NHRA technical information to help other racers, from pushrod intake manifolds to accepted aftermarket replacement parts. Overall we've been very successful in helping the racer. That said, we are not infallible and we do always recommend that if you're going into the engine that you double check the casting numbers. If there is an issue we are quick to react and NHRA has been very responsive to our updates. We've sent in enough parts for confirmation that there might eventually be a whole car in their Indy office! As anyone who has gone through a record teardown can attest, no one goes in thinking they are not legal, and no matter what the cause it's a bummer to not pass. In this case I already apologized to Chris for our oversight. I can guarantee that we are adding another check to our submission process to keep this from happening, and I'm sure Chris will double check the casting numbers on the NHRA site in the future as well. It's an unfortunate event when anyone fails tech on an oversight or technicality. It gives me no pleasure to see any racer suffer from that consequence and we do take it seriously. For those of you that have delivered numerous Ford records over the last few years I thank you for your diligence and dedication. I can tell you that we are committed to continuing our diligence and dedication to keep you in the winners circle as best we can!
