Re: Project - NHRA Stock and S/S results 61-68
Adding weight:
Per the books I have, thru 1969: You could NOT add weight - if the shipping weight was 5 lb light, too bad, you went into the bottom of the faster class. So, just a bad combo. Per my 1989 NHRA book, you could ballast or remove, 100-200 lb or so. So, not sure about 1977. The 1973 record had the same classes as 1968, so B/S=8.50, meaning the factor had to be between 370hp and 385hp. Since the RA4 was factored to 380hp back then, the RA2 at 370-375hp makes some sense. Seems like those pictures are all B/S, but to get up into A/S, well the heaviest year for A/S was 1968 when A/S=8.00. Or, from 1973-up also had A/S=8.00 class To get up into A/S=8.00-8.49 the RA2 would have to be factored at 390-410hp, somewhere in there. I guess that's possible - they factored the RA2 way up, then back down to maybe 370hp. Bottom line is we just dont know. Either way it seems that B/SA=8.50 Mystery Ben Wolf car of Spring 69 was either a: 69 GTO RA4 69 Bird RA4 68 Bird RA2 Nothing else seems to fit up that high. OK, I’m with the program now! I was working backwards...assuming less power = lower class....but forgot about weight. So in Summary - Wolf was NOT a Cat , either 333hp or 405hp - The 333hp cars w ould have run very low classes I think I’ll just have to take your best guess on Wolf’s car. |

DC & OldSkool - On another tack....I’m making up a list of cars that were seen for the first time in 69 in SS.
Basically any new models, or existing models with new for 69 engines. So far I have the L72 and ZL1 Camaros, the Hurst AMC AMX ...can you think of any others? |

I found that car in Petersen but wasnt sure, cant see Scalia on it.
Says Z28 in the grille so had some doubts. But if that's the car it also confirms a cowl hood, which I think kicked the 427/425hp-L72 factor up from 435hp to 445hp. Very close fit to class at W/P=7.57. I'm officially taking the "pink" out of those boxes so it's "Confirmed" LOL. As confirmed as anything gets sometimes. |

D/S=9.00 67 Camaro Robertson E/S=9.50 68 Camaro Durbin What I do have is D/S=9.00 Robertson BUICK which is what the narrative said but it's wrong. No Buick up that high for one thing but I have Robertson's car picture from Peterson, it's a Camaro. Those charts will need some updating after all this, but that's the point! photo of Robertson's 67 Z28 at 69 Indy: https://archive.petersen.org/pages/p...php?ref=326967 Last edited by DeuceCoupe; 09-30-2021 at 12:19 AM. |

I thought Oldskool would like this one.
Looks like the H/SA=11.00 runoff race. Winner, Merkle in the heavy Fairlane Ragtop 428CJ. R/U, no name but could it be record-holder Mosley? Car says "Movin On" 65 Cat 2+2, 421/356-6v fits class, 4055/356=11.39 https://archive.petersen.org/pages/p...php?ref=320904 |

(For 68 only the Mustang had those, Fairlanes were all auto flat hood) 69 GTO Ra4 69 Nova 350/LM1. The LM1 350/255hp was factored to 270hp almost right away & still kept winning. It showed up &won in the Camaro, Nova, Chevelle, Camaro Ragtop, even the big car. It was kind of the new "283". This is the same engine you'd see for the next 30 years in auto parts store lobbies as a "new GM Goodwrench 350 for $1195" or whatever. It's just basically a 350/300hp with lower compression. Some of the Hemi cars got ram air for 1969 which I think was new vs 68. Factor didnt change AFAIK which is a little strange. NHRA didnt totally know how to handle factoring yet for combos that had EITHER flat hood or cold air. Sometimes cold air got factored higher, sometimes not. |

But I don't know of a single car that ran SS, in '69. John Angeles had a '69 SS Bird that is said to have been the 1st Pontiac 400 powered reg SS Pontiac to break into the 9's, back in 2000. John's daughter Keri was driving it. But I doubt John was racing it in '69, especially not in SS. Would probably have had to be a Pontiac dealer sponsored car. There were some dealers racing Stockers back then. But I don't know of any who raced a new '69 Pontiac, in '69, in SS. I have pics of 2 possibilities. But, I don't know what year they began racing in SS. One had "Strong" on the door & was marked SS/F. The other was Phil Monteith's '69 RAIV "Hatari" Bird, marked SS/FA. I've seem it marked with a stock class designation. So, I don't know that he ran SS, in '69. Am posting a pic of the "Chief Justice" SS/G '69 Judge. It's a small tire Super Stocker. But again, don't know when it began racing SS. The "Packin Poncho" was a '69 RAIV SS Judge. I think it ran in AHRA & IHRA events, mostly, since it had an aftermarket hoop scoop. We saw it run back in around '75 or '76 in Amarillo, @ the World Nationals. In this pic, it was running SS3/GA An aticle on FB says this: "... This is the famous race car of Royce Fowlers - the Packin Poncho. This is 1 of 549 Ram Air IV with a manual transmission. It was originally commissioned in 1969 to be a super stock race car and only has 5124 miles clocked on the odometer..." https://www.facebook.com/krybabyperf...4468627055298/ http://www.oneownercollectorcar.com/...o-royce-fowler Last edited by oldskool; 09-30-2021 at 01:24 AM. |
