Re: A990 Super Stockers
Chicago area last I knew. That's been about ten or so years though? I really quit keeping up on a lot of this stuff a few years ago.

Re: A990 Super Stockers
Did any of the A990 cars (or 1964 Hemi cars for that matter) race in NHRA with a SINGLE Quad Hemi?
Reason I ask is I'm trying to find a combo that would have fit the Wt/HP=7.00-7.49 class back then. All the Hemi cars are too light, W/P=6.xx, and all the MaxWedge cars are too heavy, W/P=7.56 or more. For example, McCandless won SS/D=7.00 class at 1969 Indy. Drag News just says "64 Dodge", no detail. I thought his cars were 65's anyway. Mancini 64 Dodge won SS/DA=7.00 class also at 69 Indy, with Wren as R/U, 64 Plymouth. Then Costa won SS/CA=7.00 class at 71 Indy, says 65 Plymouth, again no detail. The factored dual quad race hemi A990 cars are too light for this class, they ran a class up in the W/P=6.50 class, so I wondered what engine these guys had in there to run W/P=7.00 class. See this other thread (pg 5, 8, 9, 10) for some relevant discussion: http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...=20986&page=10 Last edited by DeuceCoupe; 10-13-2020 at 09:45 PM. |

Re: A990 Super Stockers
I think the confusion is coming because several years ago the NHRA started letting 65's (and I guess 64's) run with 1 4 bbl. And I believe this is in Stock. As far as I know, in the previous 45 or so years it was always Super Stock with 2 4 bbls on the crossram. I think Jim Hale has run the 1 4 bbl configuration. You could call him for an explanation. My hat is off to Jim. He's got to be 150 years old and still racing!

Re: A990 Super Stockers
It's legal in Super Stock as well. I believe Rick Johnson was running the single four combination on his '64 Dodge when he won Brainerd a few years back.
You're correct though, the single four "Nascar" deal is a newer addition...last 15 or so years? Do you have Mr. Costa's first name? The name Costa is ringing a bell, but I'm drawing a blank. Could the year of the vehicle be a misprint? I know the '65 cars were running B in the early 70's, but were in C by the end of the decade. |

Steve, Thanks again for your reply on the other thread here: http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...=20986&page=10 Paul Costa won SS/CA=7.00 class at Sep 71 Indy. Doesn't give city/state just 11.52 at 120.48mph OK the other sheet in Drag News says Paul Costa Livonia, MI Also, NO YEAR GIVEN on Costa car, I don't know why I guessed 65 but could easily be a 64 car. Maybe that solves the mystery. The single quad setup sounds like a "new addition" so likely the cars running 1969-71 were all dual quads. Maybe the bogus letter made them legal as of 1969 race year but not before that? Last edited by DeuceCoupe; 10-14-2020 at 08:29 PM. |

Re: A990 Super Stockers
Paul Costa had a '68 Road Runner. There's a photo of the car in the Petersen archive stuff. Plain color, no fancy paint, Super Tricks. The National Dragster results show him in a '68 Plymouth, with the car number, #1527.
As far as the cars made legal in 1969, correct, they were not legal before that. Now everything is legal...go figure. Want to build a '64 Polara 500 convertible with a Nascar Hemi? Have at it! |

Steve, Thanks again. I found the picture https://archive.petersen.org/pages/p...php?ref=405232 I don't have all the National Dragster sheets so the sheet I have doesn't have the make or year of car on it for 71 Indy results. Have had to track them down one by one. I just spent $100 on the Drag News CD set, nice stuff but I thought it would have more nationals results in it. Not much. Looking for the full results sheets from 69 Sprint TX Superstock 70 Spring TX SS & S 70 Summer PA SS & S 71 Pomona Superstock 71 Spring TX SS & S 71 Summer NJ SS & S If anybody has those, Tom Kaasch has been very helpful posting some of the other years. A long journey of history but trying to capture it from those that were there. My 1st 1/4 mile was 1975 and the era was over by then. Last edited by DeuceCoupe; 10-15-2020 at 09:33 PM. |

Re: A990 Super Stockers
DeuceCoupe, from Nitro Joe's 2022 year end stats
SS/CA 10.05 9.644 -0.406 426 Mark Norris '64 Belvedere 1964 Plym 426 425 460 CE 1 D42 NOBLE Mark Norris is a friend of mine and I know a little about the history of this car. Mark runs the car pretty much in bracket mode. Mark has a Drag Pack that is capable of 1.00 under. It is a Jim Hale car built by "Joe Smith" It has been campaigned as a single 4 bbl Hemi Jim Hale built his current SS/DA hemi car based off the cage and chassis of Marks SS/CA
