Actually made in the 420's on the dyno.

It was a really good engine in that truck as far as pulling with a 1/2 ton 4x4. The Lightning trucks of the day had the GT40 heads I think, but I never drove one for comparison.
I also have the parts for a 69 290HP 351W, but feel its too high a factor to start out with in S/SS unless you really want to do it.
The Lightnings those years had the same motor as the Cobra R except the trucks had the tublar GT40 intake and the Cobra had the cast intake. Yes same F3 GT40 heads.

I’d run it in GT class.
Call Jeff Lawrence at Lawrence Racing Engines before you go down the Cleveland route. There was an aluminum head approved for them at one time I believe, that's probably the way to go (at least you can weld in those).

The casting numbers on the block are not a consideration , the heads (and intake manifold on a Stocker) are. Many engine combinations are allowed to run approved aftermarket blocks.

Jeff should be the first guy to call for sure.

I know a little about the 70 351c combination in Super stock since I ran it for a few years. I went a best of 10.53 in ss/j on a 11.05 index in 1993. I went through teardown at the u.s. nationals 3 times with that combination. The Autolite carb is very problematic and can be a real pain. Verne Buchanan is the one to talk to about a carb. Toss the doae-l block aside and get a ford performance boss 351 block windsor based block which is legal. It would be better to run the open chamber 280 hp 71 or 72 266hp in ss-gt. The 220 hp 302 is one of the last things I would consider for that body in super stock, the horsepower rating is too high, you would be lucky to run the index with every trick in the book.

Question for the o/p..
Have you looked into the cost of a competitive S/S Ford engine yet?

I have and I know it’s not cheap.

Not even in the same ballpark as cheap, but good luck ;-)
