I went down the track the first time in 1964 and was hooked. After a tour on the USS America, I returned to shore duty and Tom Stenzel and I built a 1969 Camaro, 427/425, 4 speed and set the B/S record at Gainesville, Fla. on a hot and humid Sept. 13, 1969. That was when racing was fun. We painted the car, built the engine(std. bore TRW pistons), rebuilt the M22, and assembled the 12 bolt rear. We had almost $2000 in the car before it went down the track; quite a sum for two young guys at the time. I have raced several cars in stock and SS over the years. I still build a few stocker motors since I sold my stocker in 2010.

Darryl Davis, who was Div. 2 Tech Director during this time frame, had one of the fastest 62 Dodge 383/343 wagons I have seen. He ruled G/SA in Div. 2 at will.

Looking at that 1970 Nat'l Record sheet...
H/SA records were held by 383/343 wagons... 12.40's 110 Bernie's Chevy II went 12.40's the first time I saw it run at E-town.. Our stick car went 2 tenths under the existing record on it's 3rd run... Ray Allen made that run....at a test day at Etown

H/S in 1970 stick car combos we raced against
'61 Corvette.....HP ? '57 Corvette.... HP ? Olds Cutlass....350 in a '69 or '70 HP ? Can't recall much else but those 3 combos had some good running cars out there... 350 Chevys were pretty new and dominated the older combos right away. The real killer Chevy combo was the low compression 350/255......HP rating was low and they were fast. A lot of people were hesitant to race one at first until they saw how fast the ones that did were..... Boertman and Bobby Warren....and Bud Rowe had one.....

That was when they weighed the car without the driver and had to include 5 gals of gas. Our Chevy II Had to weigh right around 3100lbs I think it was. We never even thought much about driver weight. We also never had any idea about the common practice of cooling the engine with a chiller. We actually did the opposite and pre-heated the engine with a set of hoses connected to our ramp truck. This was what our engine builder Ralph Truppi said we should do to protect and preserve the rings. I made up 2 long heater hoses with quick connect fittings. Hydraulic type connectors and I still have them! Ran warm water thru the engine before starting it. Probably could have run at least a tenth quicker with a light driver and a chilled engine.....more like 2 tenths.....!!!!
