(A) A car like you had in high school.
(B) A car that should run in the 12's.
(C) A 1969 Camaro with a 396.
(D) A car with a soft horsepower rating that should qualify anywhere.
(E) A car that fits a class that nobody runs.
(F) A car that has 6 other cars in the class in your division.
(G) None of the above.
(H) A car that has a soft index.

I would build a car like I had in high school that ran in the 12's and had a soft horsepower rating so it qualified anywhere in a class that noboby ran and had a soft index.

Yes Billy;
Chevy installed the last 409s in the 65 Chevy.
Built a 1965 Chevy SS model from AMP that had that engine and not the BBC.
NHRA even has it listed..go check it out!

Go build one Billy !

Hmmm...I essentially have no race car (not done yet) and I don't plan on putting more than $6000 in mine, in one fell swoop anyway. I'm leaning towards E so I can get in the game with something completely different. If it gets too crowded down in T/SA, I'll put a stick in the car and be in some real exclusive company. (zero).

Randy,
I have always liked "D" and "H". If I had a lot of money I would run A/S.

Actually there were and saw one in 1967.
Did not build many! NHRA is not listing it.
Chevy did not push it because of the 396!
Think they also put the in Canadian Pontiacs.

But seriously(yeah right), I think that I'd be going for D,E and H in equal amounts.
Would not be surprised if someone other than Hill does
that 305 first.......(not me.)....

B for me please.
Start with a roller that's old enough to be cheap, but not old enough to be collectible. A Fox-body Mustang/Fairmount or Monte Carlo/Cutlass/Regal for example. A third gen Camaro would be nice, but they seem to getting higher prices. Used parts are readily available, but I see a lot of rollers with a spool and axles and suspension upgrades for under $3k.
Add a home built 400" sbc with cast pistons, a moderate cam and used Edelbrock Torquer and 850 Holley. Rebuild a TH350 or glide. Probably have to pay full price for well matched converter.
This should be good for low twelves or even high elevens, with DOT drag radials and mufflers. Then go get some bracket racing skills running against the regulars in Street Elim (aka Sportsman or Bracket 3).
Almost forgot- don't do anything to the roller that would make it illegal for Stock, just in case the money for a proper race engine should suddenly appear.
