Sounds like a better deal than a slow stocker. I bought a 70 Firebird, 400/2bbl at a farm auction for $500, maybe I should scrap the V/SA car and do this instead!

I shouldn't have bought the car, as I had one to build, but no way was the scrap dealer getting it!

WOW.....30 + years ago. You didnt mention when YOU RACED THE WAGON. I guess you stay on top of things....LOL. Back then the cam had to be OEM, everything stock STOCK STOCK AND OEM street tires as when NHRA dropped the ball in 1972 and eliminated Jr. stock.

When I lived in NC I ran a '95 Impala SS in Pure Stock. Pretty good combination and not something you see every day. Nice way to have a street/strip "bolt-on" car that can run class without sinking the monstrous amount of $$$ some of these guys put into their cars.

Bought an '04 Corvette coupe last spring that I want to begin running in C/PS next spring. Bone stock (with our luggage in the back) it ran 13.3 at Ennis this summer at Super Chevy. Index is 12.75. Horsepower and AFHS is very favorable for the LS1 in a C5 as opposed to the Camaro/Firebird. I've since added a nice cold air kit, Z06 cat back, and tune. Should be in the high 12s or right at 13.0. I'm thinking a gear change and TC this winter will put it solidly under the index and I'll still drive to the track with the AC on. Heck, there is a guy in Florida that drives his to the track and easily runs under the D/SA index in NHRA.

Should be no problem. I have several stock LS1 F body customers running under your index, with heavier cars. A couple with stock gears & converters.

Reading www.corvetteforum.com they have an ET list and there are many, many under the index with only bolt-ons and a ton more than a second under. I think the quickest one is in the low 11s which is more than 1.5 under. I'm thinking about going with a 4.10 gear and Yank SS or PT4000 since it's not a daily driver.

There was a little clue in that thread about how long ago I ran pure stock. Milan hasn't had the Northern Nationals for quite awhile. Milan went NHRA soon after, and lost the Northern Nationals title, when they went back to IHRA, they got the Motor City Nationals. Now they are back with NHRA. I guess that is what happens when you race at the same place for 35 years !

I have a 95 Impala SS, a car like TarHeel, and Corbitt Marshburn. It is driven to all the races and the trunk is huge and can take everything needed to the track.

Gas Mileage is at 19mpg. Been racing it since buying it new in ECIRS as a Bolt on and over time got it running well under the IHRA index.

Since then the car has a new interior, paint, complete new rear, Warren engine, Shane tranny, Yank converter and has run .85 under. Few more mods should go a full second.

But would have to take it off the street to do that. Such as more gearing and tire.

For now on a hot day will still run a half second under and have the benefit of AC driving back to the pits..:-)

Any advice for someone looking at this class? The car in question is a 70 Firebird, 400/2bbl (265hp), puts it at 13.00 in the books and a F/PS.

Any suggestions on the 2bbl? The combo in general?

IHRA will have the specs for the older combos,I would say anything 86 or older they will have cam specs because they used NHRA specs and NHRA specs had duration, overlap,
and spring specs till 86 at least.

IRACEITALL,
If I could have 4bbl combo I would try to do that,2bbl is harder to make work and weather will affect more.

Hemi Parts
If car was 2 speed then you will have to use glide if was three speed then can be 3 spd just remember can't have manual valve body.
Sticks and autos run together might as well go stick and have fun
I would try call IHRA office and see who can answer your questions used to be Mike Baker, Hank Blakenship could tell you(he's does'nt work@ office) or I say Terry Bell still remembers
