That is my thinking also. If the car rolls easily, winch it into the trailer directly. Use a snatch block if the car has a problem. It is also good if someone follows and keeps a 4x4 block close to a rear wheel so it won't roll back if the cable snaps or the winch fails. A coat on the cable will prevent it from whipping around if it breaks.
