Re: Power glide 1st gear
The lower the ratio, the smaller the input sun gear and the weaker the gear set in general The 1.96 that's popular currently is based on the 1.76 carrier seems to live quite well. Many of the other low ratio gear sets are based on the 1.82 carrier and they can be pretty fragile. I've stopped building anything lower than the 1.96.

Re: Power glide 1st gear
How about the 2.08 gear sets?I have one in my Chevelle wit 5.38's for an overall first gear ratio of 11.19 to 1, and my Chevelle wagon has a set of 5.57's for an overall gear ratio of 11.585. Both cars leave well and you go for a long ride in high gear after the up shift.

Re: Power glide 1st gear
I always ran a 2.08 with a 5.13 in my 67 Camaro small block stocker. Never had any trouble with the trans though the motor never made much more than 400 hp.
