Re: CCMP Race #5 at Darlington
Liberty's Gears Darlington Dragway Race Recap #5:
This weekend's race was all about Gary McKee "Day Dreamer"❤️ & everyone was racing in his memory. We had 7 cars this weekend, with 3 of them being newcomers to our association & 1 of them drove a stick car for the first time on Friday evening. We started out with Q1 on Saturday afternoon with Brad Smith piloting the Gary McKee 1967 Corvette with an updated BM 330 CI engine & Robbie Draughon in his 1966 Corvette AM 360 CI combination. Brad wasn't able to make a full pass but Robbie on the other hand left me with my mouth wide-opened & telling the track employees there was something wrong with their timing equipment because there was no way possible he went a 5.1387 at 134.13 mph (-0.7613). Our 2nd pair out was Ronald Yopp in his 1962 Chevy Corvette DM 302 CI running a 5.8637 at 115.62 mph (-0.04863) & Steve Johnson in his 1966 Chevy II EM 267 CI running a 5.9079 at 116.28 mph (-0.05921). Next pair out was Strawberry Dixon with his 1964 Chevy Corvette BM 343 CI running a 5.4009 at 126.90 mph (-0.06091) & new to stick racing, Jeff Hoyle running the Darrell Lail owned 1969 Camaro CM 323 CI going 5.8742 at 116.94 mph (-0.3258). The final car to run in Q1 was a newcomer to CCMP, Darrion Houston in his 1985 Chevy Camaro DM 286 CI stopping the clocks at 5.9437 at 113.90 mph (-0.4063). After Q1, Draughon was on top, followed by Dixon, Johnson, Yopp, Houston, Hoyle, & Smith. Q2 shook up things a little bit with Johnson, Dixon, Smith, Houston, & Hoyle improving on their runs. Once it was completed, the ladder was established & the pairings were as follows: Hoyle CM versus Smith BM with Smith having the advantage at the tree & taking it to a 1st round win running a 5.9056 at 94.74 mph on his 6.01 index. Unfortunately Hoyle suffered some transmission issues that we later found during Sunday's CCRA-Carolina Class Racers Association Dash for Cash run. The 2nd pair out was Dixon BM versus Houston DM. Strawberry also had the advantage at hit & carried it to a R1 win. Our 3rd pair puts Johnson EM against Yopp DM with Yopp having the reaction advantage but Johnson was took the round win running a 5.9051 off his 6.50 index. Draughon was the last one to run in E1 taking the bye run for his #1 Qualifying position & picking up the $200.00 Top Qualifier award, Thanks to Hodges Custom Homes (Art Hodges). Round #2 pairings has Draughon AM against Dixon BM & Johnson EM against Smith BM. Robbie took the R2 win improving on his #1 qualifying run by going a 5.1249 at 134.37 mph (-0.7751) on his 5.90 index. Johnson & Smith were late at the hit but Johnson went on to win R2 taking out Smith. Steve went a 5.8828 at 112.00 mph (-0.06172) on his 6.50 index. Due to heavy dew falling on the track, the race was stopped after R2 & would be completed on Sunday morning starting at 10 a.m. We still have the $100.00 anonymous Bounty sponsor on Robbie coming into the finals. Draughon had lane choice & choose the right lane over Johnson. The race was over at the start when Johnson turned on the red bulb -.0032 . Robbie had a .0208 RT & stopped the clocks at 5.1227 at 135.46 mph (-0.7773) to take his 2nd victory in the CCMP Series. Robbie received his race winnings as well as a big trailer check courtesy of MJ Printing & Graphics , a certificate for a set of #E3 Ignition spark plugs, Altronics Inc $100.00 gift certificate, $50.00 gift certificate to #Meziere Enterprises, $100.00 gift certificate to COMP Cams, $100.00 gift certificate from Edelbrock Performance, a 5 gallon pail of PRO 116+ Renegade Race Fuels & Lubricants, & a can of #FOGGIT. Steve collected his runner-up winnings as well as a certificate for a set of #E3 Ignition spark plugs, $100.00 gift certificate to #Crew Chief Pro Software, a 50% off one item from Zamp Racing, $50.00 gift certificate from Edelbrock Performance, $50.00 gift certifcate from #Comp Cams, & a 5 gallon pail of F25 racing fuel from Fuel Factory. Caleb Beaman knocked it out of the part with the the custom CCMP trophies courtesy of engine components from Robbie Draughon Powertrain Development, #Beaman Motorsports, & #Comp Cams. Last week he actually had to make 2 of the trophies instead of the one. Gary McKee had talked to his son, Brodie with a goal of winning him one of our custom trophies. Unfortunately we lost Gary a few weeks ago unexpectedly & Robbie Draughon said Gary was going to get this trophy so there was a custom trophy built for Gary & presented to Brodie on Saturday. Our final race of the 2024 season is November 23rd at The Dragway at Coastal Plains Park. Let's finish off the season with an 8 car field!
