Last I knew, and I believe it is still true, the bridges in NY only charge eastbound traffic. From VT, we would run our trucks down I-91 to I-95 South, Cross Bronx, GW Bridge. On the way back, we would run Route 17 North to I-287 to I-87 North (NY Thruway) and the toll all the way up to Albany was less than the bridge tolls, PARTICULARLY the GW. Now, we would run 2 lane roads back to VT. If you run the Mass Pike, you'd probably lose all advantage.

Possible best travel times on GWB and Cross Bronx are from Midnight till about 4:30 AM and then from 11:00 AM till about 12:30 PM. After that - it's a crap shoot ! You better be on your toe's also any lane including the shoulders are fair game. They'll cut you off on the right and then tell you you're wrong !
It's New York baby and the natives don't take prisioners!
Enjoy your Trip.

Well, I'm a NY native. I've driven through there many times. I know it won't be a fun part of the trip.
