Trim level question
Just picked up a 79 mustang to build a 302 2bbl stocker out of. The hood on it has a scoop and it says cobra on the side. Look in the class guide and base/Cobra/ghia.
Base and Cobra are able to add weight to T, but the ghia is the “luxury “ version and can get down to U at a whopping 3110lbs. Question, besides the sticker on the door and chrome badge on the dash, can I pick which trim level and the resulting class? (Also have everything now to build a crate motor with the exception of the cam, lol) |

Re: Trim level question
First thing..Nobody knows..Nobody cares.
Where are you going to race this? Local combos and opens? Cobra , w/ scoop is 147 now, with carb.doesn't make U, so technically you have to ditch the hood and call it a Ghia.Ghia was mostly an interior trim package, which doesn't matter to anyone . Cobra, @ 143 makes U but is a variable venturi, which should be faster if you can make it work. Otherwise you have to carry 80 more pounds with the carb.

Re: Trim level question
Thanks Mark! Yes, local combo events and opens.
It has a goofy hole in the hood to match the "cobra" hood scoop but I'm pretty sure it wasn't open from the factory. I'll have to see how it originally came. I've worked on the VV carbs but would rather the regular 1.08 2bbl. (probably just send it to someone) T/SA is fine as well, no other U or T cars around here that I know of so I'm not concerned with that. I Need a converter (pretty sure my 25 year old 3000 "sat night special" won't be optimum) LOL! I Need a cam, probably call bullet. I need to put a battery back in the front (currently have two in the rear as it's currently a bracket car) List goes on and on! Just taking the next step after talking about it for years (and years and years as the guys here say, lol) |

Re: Trim level question
You got me thinking Mark so I had to double check it.
The 79 mustang ghia with 302 auto and carb is 140hp, factored at 147. The 79 mustang ghia with 302 auto and VV carb is 143, factored to 143. So, running the 1.08 2bbl is 147hp now and is 19.03 which can fit U/SA (142# over shipping weight) at 3110lbs. Unless I’m reading it wrong and probably am….. |

Re: Trim level question
You are correct as long as it's a hatch.
