Default Jack Mullins Firebird?

I remember sometime after the wagon and the 4dr hardtop pontiacs Jack ran, he had a white (what else?) 70's firebird for a short time. I remember it as very quick but look liked the body work was done with a sledge hammer. Maybe that made it more aero?
Anyway, does anyone out there remember this car and have a picture or two. I don't remember anyone ever discussing it before.
If I remember it was rumored to have gone to Texas.......if it even existed. Maybe the memories are crossing over each other.

I remember the car. It was a junkyard recovery and converted into a Trans AM to be able to run the SD 455. The hood came off a burned car so it had a few ripples in it. At the same time, NHRA instituted the breakout type racing in Stock and SS, so Jack lost interest and sold the car. I never knew where the car went to.

I don't remember the Firebird...but did he have a '63 2dr hardtop in possibly SS/R
prior to the wagon...or was it a 4-dr?

Of course...his favorite color...think I've got a photo from Indy somewhere...but it would
take years to find....

Was the Firebird a SS car...or a Stocker?

I remember a 4dr hardtop.

I believe the firebird was a SS car.

Correct on both counts. I do not remember Jack running the hardtop at Indy; it came after the wagon.

I raced against Jack's Firebird at Gainesville , maybe '76? Nosed him out for class! Was I nervous! He was the king of SS at the time and I think you still had to win class to qualify for eliminator. Bob Michael

I believe the firebird was sold to Glenn Tinsley in the mid 70's, it's the one in the back.

That's the Texas connection I was trying to remember. Heard that as a possibility some years ago.
Just no way of knowing for sure unless anyone has a way to prove/disprove.

Found this: http://www.competitionplus.com/05_20...ohn_clegg.html

Says he bought it new in '73. So...where's Jack's old firebird?

Hello, I did indeed purchase Jack's 73 Bird. It served me well until I decided to go AA/MC racing. It was a multiple record holder for me and was an easy car to sell in Houston. It was sold to a young medical student and I believe the car is still in Houston, although inactive for years. The 74 car pictured in the article was mine ...John Clegg did own the 73 from the showroom. I raced the 74 until the Budweiser Motor Craft Super Team came along. I traded the 74 to John for an excellent fifth wheel that John was building to haul the Mustang. John's son JB campaigns the car today.....Glen Tinsley
