The Vegas Divisional was the first time my son's Aspen SS/MA every was on a Drag Strip in well over twenty years. The transmission had sat on the shelf for a number or years, and broke first pass going down the track. Normally we would have tested the car extensively before bringing it to a race. However, my son and friends knew that I wished to see the car go down the track prior to my Surgery.
Although I am sure they were tired and hungry, Dave and Darin Smith spent the dinner hour disassembling, repairing and assembling our trans in their trailer for us rather than going to dinner or back to the hotel. In our opinion there are no better people in the aftermarket business! By the way.........I forgot to mention that they had us on the ladder. They would have had a single first round if they had not repaired our trans. Thank you, John Irving |

That's what drag racing is all about. Not about beating someone, but the friendships it creates. The Smiths just gained another notch of respect from me.
John, I've been thinking about you since Pomona and what you're going through. I pray everything goes well as I want to at least have another chance to b.s. with you at the track again. Thanks for being one of the good guys!!!

I've known Dave Smith for 30 years, since we worked at the L.A.County Mechanical Department shops. I was at Pomona in '82 when they won Super Stock with the Cuda. I've seen Dave's son and daughter grow up, and start racing, and there is no finer racing family on earth. You can't say enough good things about all of them. We also couldn' t have been happier for them when Darren won the championship a few years back.He and the silver Dart absolutely dominated Div.7 Super Stock that year. We're fortunate to know them. I think this points out the general quality of class racers no matter the Association.
In my experience racers have always dropped whatever they were doing in order to help fellow racers have a chance to compete. This is something you won't see in any other motorsport. A big thanks to them for helping John and son. JimR

John,
I don't know what kind of surgery you were referring to but I hope that it goes as well as possible. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. The Wagons of Steel crew |
