Default Anybody Know what the index or record was in I/SA in 1972?

I've got a old I/SA 72 Gran Torino Sport [yes the one in the classified section] It doesn't look like it's going to sell, so I'm going to build a stock 72 351CJ motor and I want to see if I can get it to run the 1972 I/SA record or index [if they had index's in 1972?] I know I'm not smart enough to get it to run todays index of 12.30 [Damb thats fast, LOL....] Anybody remember the record or index? or is there somewhere to look it up? Thanx EJ at www.CobraJetRacing.com

Oldest National Dragster I have is Oct 1977, the index was 12.68

the record was 12.41 at 107.27... Set in May 77

Not the year you wanted, but some info anyway...

We ran off National Records back then. From the Dec. 1 1972 National Dragster
I/SA 15.65 Minimum MPH Record 85.71 back then you could set MPH with out hitting
the ET record. In 1973 I think NHRA changed the weight breaks I stock was a 12.00 lbs
break. I know the H/S et was a Minimum of 13.30 at that time.

Years ago I sold another one of 72 Torino to a guy in Detroit, he was trying to replace the Torino he raced in 1972 and he said the record was 13.50 in I/SA in 1972 but maybe he meant the index????????? I guess if I can get my 72 to run a low 13...... I'll be happy......... EJ

In 1972 We ran off National Records.Records were very soft in 1972-73. This was the New Stock Elim.1960 and latter cars no slicks or headers no cheater cams.

As of 2009, it was still 12.60 in I/SA. Think the '09 Indexes were a little soft? lol

Grape, that stock elim thing with no headers, slicks or cam sounds like what the guy was talking about, because he said he drove his car from the show room floor to the track.....and ran a high 13.......anyway, thanx for all the replies guys, guess I'm just going to build a stock 72 CJ with a Lunati stock lift, big duration cam that they just cut for me, with the headers, 3,500 stall, 5.14 gears and 29.5x11.5 slicks, and go from there....... Can't beleive you can get this 4,000 small block car to run a 12.60... and I see most guys run a second under the index, you guys are way smarter then me, LOL........... but most guys at my local small track I run at can't beleive the car runs a 13.90 right now with a stock, low compresion 73 CJ motor......... Anyway, thanx again guys, EJ

I'll sell you a restored and race prepped 4300 Autolite for $550.00. I've got about $800 into it and it has never been installed since the work was done.
